Sign of Things to Come? Maine Now Allows Concealed Carry Without Permit

Congratulations Maine! Beginning this week, you will become the 8th state or territory to allow some form of unrestricted concealed carry in public places. All residents aged 21 or over will no longer need a permit to carry a pistol or revolver on their person, when traveling on foot or in their vehicles. There are a few exceptions such as courthouses, schools, federal buildings, state parks, etc. But for the most part, so long as you’re legally allowed to own a firearm, you’re good to go in the State of Maine.

And contrary to what many of the gun grabbers would have you think, the state isn’t going to turn into a Mad Max free-for-all any time soon.

“This is a poor piece of legislation that we’re all about to suffer through,” Portland Police Chief Mike Sauschuck told local news station WCSH6.

Ryan Reardon, Interim Kennebec County Sheriff, said he has “some concern” but supports the law overall. “I think the scrutiny for weapons should be at the point of purchase,” he told the Portland Press Herald.

Previously, carrying a concealed handgun required a police-issued permit. To get one, a gun owner needed to undergo a background check and fingerprinting, take a gun safety course, fill out a six-page application and pay a $35 fee.

Advocates for the law say worries about safety are unfounded.

“People think all of a sudden it’s going to be the wild, Wild West,” Jeff Zimba, a firearms policy consultant and gun safety instructor who testified in support of the new laws, told the Bangor Daily News. “We’re finding just the opposite — people are signing up for safety courses. They want more education. They’re all saying doomsday, but we’re seeing just the opposite.”

For gun rights activists though, there is another reason to celebrate even if you’re not a resident of Maine. One could consider conceal carry rights to be a bellwether for all firearm rights. After all, letting someone carry a gun without official training or sanction is one of the biggest responsibilities that a government can relinquish to the citizenry. It’s a sign that your government (at the state level anyway) trusts you to take care of your own safety, and is willing to loosen its monopoly on the use of force. If your state allows this, then it’s probably moving in a promising direction for Second Amendment Rights.

So why should gun owners across the nation be ecstatic about this development? Because Maine is a somewhat liberal state, and the only liberal state to allow constitutional carry other than Vermont. When you start to see developments like these show up in left leaning states, it means that pro-gun activists are winning the debate across the board. In fact, the pro-gun crowd has been winning this battle for a very long time, despite the best efforts of the gun grabbers. Take a look at how concealed carry laws have changed in this country over the past 30 years.

That’s a very clear, long-term trend in favor of the Second Amendment. While Americans have lost countless rights in the same period of time, we’ve held on to our right to bear arms with a death grip.

The fight is hardly over of course. Attacks against the Second Amendment have been escalating in recent years, while some states have still managed to tighten their grip on firearms in other ways. But as public opinion slowly shifts in the favor of gun rights, and liberal states like Maine start to loosen their laws, the future of gun rights in America is looking good. So keep up the fight, because in the big scheme of things, we are winning.

    In the wake of increasing lone wolf terrorists and shooters (real or government-made) and increasing gang banga violence like mob attacks and the knockout game, every American should be able to carry after taking a safety course. I believe that ex-felons should continue to be restricted, as well as people who are certifiably insane, although that does present the possibility of a slippery slope where government deems someone crazy for criticizing government. But hopefully this trend for supporting our right to defend ourselves will continue.

    The gun grabbers would have us believe that the country is in the middle of a nationwide shooting spree. The statistics that they are using are either exaggerated or fabricated. According to these leftist statistics there have been 243 mass shootings, and 74 school shootings this year. What a crock of shit. They have padded the numbers as much as possible. Any time a gun goes off near a school, no matter the reason, it gets added to the statistics. Many of the school shootings likely never even happened at all. At least 1 was in self defense outside of the school. Some were suicides. Only 7 were actual school shootings.
    As for the 243 mass shootings this year, most of them happened in a private residence, which is commonly referred to as a home invasion. In total, there were only 44 mass shootings – since 2000. So these statistics are grossly exaggerated by the leftist gun grabbers for shock value to push their gun confiscation agenda.
    Another shocking statistic is that only 12% of people are aware of this. 12% of who, I don’t know, but these lies need to be countered with facts so that this gun control agenda can be stopped in its tracks. If they don’t have the statistics that show how bad guns are, they will just lie and make up numbers to “prove” their point. They add suicide deaths to the homicide rate to boost up the numbers. They want to lower the number of victims from 4 to 3 to qualify as a mass shooting so they can make the statistics look even higher. And sometimes they will just add fake or non-existent gun deaths to get the numbers they want.
    And one of the reasons they are doing this is because the number of gun deaths is going down, and that includes homicides, mass shootings, school shootings, and any other criminal activities that result in a fatality. And to push their agenda, they need the statistics to show shocking numbers of gun crimes. And they will lie, cheat and steal to get those numbers. People need to know about these lies. If people are informed with facts, then when these lies come out, people can refute them with the truth. This is nothing more than a campaign to smear and demonize the 2nd amendment and our individual right to keep and bear arms. And Hillary has made it clear that she does not believe that the 2nd amendment guarantees the individual the right to have a gun. She believes that it only applies to a state militia. If these extremist views don’t show that she is serious about confiscating America’s guns, then I don’t know what will. All these lying politicians and the zombies who believe them need to be shut down with the facts. They use Australia as an example of gun control success. But again, their lying statistics don’t support any real improvement in gun violence. They claim that suicides have gone way down. But they had been going down for 10 years before the ban. Homicides had been going down for 15 years before the ban. Just like in America, gun crime and overall crime is trending down and has been for years. So to say that the ban was the cause of lower gun crimes is a lie.
    The best way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun.

        It is disgusting. These cretins have no problem using the victims of these shootings to make people feel bad so they will make decisions based on their emotional response to it. Many people do not think clearly when presented with tragedies like this. And they latch on to whatever solution that they hear at the time. Like when Obama paraded around the children from Sandy Hook to make people feel sad so they would blame guns for the evil acts perpetrated by evil people.
        He tried to do the same thing in Oregon after the college shooting, but the people didn’t fall for it. And this is a great example of what Americans should be doing in response to the government’s attempts to infringe on our rights.
        I think it’s time to use their own tactics against them. Rules for Radicals can be used by either side. And I don’t see anything wrong with it if it is used for good purposes. We should hold them to their own standards. At the least, it would level the playing field.
        There are all kinds of tactics to choose from. For instance, psychological methods to make people receptive to our ideas and change their minds, and also to turn people off to their attempts to violate our rights and discredit our agenda.
        As long as we are on the side of good and we use these tactics to defeat evil, then there is nothing wrong with it.

    Yep-The Detroit Free Press had an op-ed writer-Hugh McDiarmid-who was vehemently anti-gun and in one of his last columns he railed against concealed carry in Michigan while it was still being debated. He actually used the Old West analogy of gun fights in the streets. What a dumb ass.

    Here in Texas open carry starts in January if you have a permit to carry concealed, in two years when the Texas legislature meets again we’ll go for Constitutional carry!

    IS WRONG. Our Declaration of Independence predates our Constitution making our Declaration the first law of our US of A.

    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,

    that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.–That
    to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, —

    The operative word is “unalienable”. This means our rights are ours at birth, not subject to any “relinquish”ment.

Brandon Phelps “NRA backed” carry bill.
    DTI does not require the “officer” to be in uniform or on duty, so police criminals and police impersonators can harass, set up, arrest and kill armed citizens with legal cover.
