Pregnant Woman Fatally Shoots Boyfriend Holding Book In Asinine Quest for YouTube Fame

Somehow surmising a book could stop a bullet, Pedro Ruiz III convinced his very pregnant girlfriend of six years, Monalisa Perez, to shoot at a book clasped to his chest for the sake of YouTube views; but — quite unsurprisingly — the impossible stunt went horrendously awry, the bullet entering his body at close range, killing him.

Some 30 onlookers gathered for the stunt — but were instead eyewitnesses to a killing common sense should have prevented.

Charged with second-degree manslaughter by Minnesota’s Norman County District Court for Ruiz’ death Wednesday, 19-year-old Perez posted $7,000 cash bail and was released yesterday afternoon — after which news of the ludicrous, impossibly failed quest for Internet fame did, indeed, go viral.

“Ruiz held up the book — described by County Attorney James Brue as a hardcover encyclopedia — and Perez pulled the trigger on a .50-caliber Desert Eagle pistol, trying to see whether the bullet would go through, according to the criminal complaint,” reports the Star Tribune.

“The Desert Eagle is described by retailer Cabela’s in an online ad as ‘one of the world’s most powerful semiautomatic handguns.’”

According to court documents, “Perez reported that Pedro Ruiz III wanted to make a YouTube video of her shooting a book and he believed that the book would stop the bullet. Monalisa Perez pointed out cameras and stated that the entire incident was recorded.”

Brue noted multiple videos of the gruesome shooting, including footage from a GoPro, exist and are being examined by authorities, but will not be released to the public.

In fact, Perez — pregnant with the couple’s second child — took to social media hours before aiming the weapon at the thick but not bulletproof tome held by the apparently over-confident Ruiz to emphasize the stunt was not her brainchild, tweeting,

“Me and Pedro are probably going to shoot one of the most dangerous videos ever. HIS idea not MINE.”

Ruiz, 22, had been known in the family as a risk-taking, amateur stuntman, as aunt Lisa Primeau — who “pretty much raised” the young father from a young age, following his mother’s death — explained, “We called him our little daredevil.”

Ruiz, she told the Star Tribune, chased thrills and was always “putting a dangerous twist on everything he did” — such as, “jumping into the swimming pool from the top of the house, no hesitation. He was a crazy driver with go-carts.”

Another aunt, Claudia Ruiz, told WDAY-TV, “He had told me about that idea and I said, ‘Don’t do it. Don’t do it. Why are you going to use a gun? Why?’”

“Because we want more viewers. We want to get famous,” Ruiz recalled her nephew replying.

She added, “It shouldn’t have happened like this. It shouldn’t have happened at all.”

“As they anticipated another child,” the Star Tribune continues, “Ruiz was supporting his growing family working for BNSF Railway and was studying to be a foreman, Primeau said. She added that she and others related to Ruiz ‘are all supporting Mona. It’s a tragic incident. What she did … she has to live with that. It’s the worst punishment she can get. She is pregnant with their second kid. It’s just heartbreaking.’”

Perhaps this hapless stunt-gone-wrong should serve as an imperative lesson to online fame-seekers everywhere not to forget logic, reason, and common sense in quests to set the Internet ablaze.

“They were in love, they loved each other,” aunt Claudia told WDAY-TV. “It was just a prank gone wrong.”

As stupid as this stunt was, it was an accident, an obviously avoidable accident. I mean, so avoidable any 3 year old could have seen this coming. I mean, seriously… Now, that being said, I don’t think she should be charge with anything. Maybe being stupid, but not anything else. I hate to say this is an accident, but it is. A nonthinking, dumb, ignorant, stupid, completely obvious outcome accident. Still, no charges should be made. She and he are just idiots. There was no malice in this or intent to kill at all. Just zero brain cells working. Stupid.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse. Gosh where have we heard THAT before?

      • elmysterio

What law are you referring to that they were “ignorant” of?

        • Pat Taylor ╚(ಠ_ಠ)=┐

          The law of physics?

      • David E

actually the courts are starting to take seriously the idea that with the multitude of laws in this country ignorance IS an excuse. No appellate court has ruled this yet, but it ,may be coming.

        • Phil_Ossifer

Believe if if/when we see it. The legal principle is, “Something that a person should know, is deemed known.” Notice, though, that this principle is very selectively applied by courts…and they want it that way. So don’t look for it to change any time soon, if ever.

SHHH!!!!! Aww, now ya went an’ done it. You just gave away the plot to “Idiocracy 2….er, 3?”

Ignorance of the law is no excuse – unless you’re one of those tasked with enforcing the law. . .

    • Richard O. Mann

I caught this on the news this morning. They will be charging her with manslaughter. She could get 20 years. Stupid is not a defense in court.

    • David E

intent to kill is not an element of manslaughter. Manslaughter is about negligent, accidental killings.

Why they did not first check to see whether an encyclopedia would stop the bullet is beyond me. Of course anyone with a lick of good sense knows a .50 isn’t going to be stopped by a book, anyway.

    • RMS1911

      Still homicide.
      Still wrongful death.
      Still negligent manslaughter.
      Still actionable on many levels.
Alot of people shot someone by accident and they went to jail for it.

So shouldn’t the schools or even fluoridated water take some of the blame?

  • frankw

And they were too dumb to try this out on the book alone before doing this idiotic stunt? I wonder what she’ll tell her kids years from now?

    • mpennery

Other reports of this event said he HAD first shot another book.

    • Richard O. Mann

50 cal Desert Eagle. That will punch through a car door, and many other items made of metal. A book would have been like tissue paper. Some people do stupid things and survive. Some don’t. This was a don’t.

      • WKP AnCap

That was my thought. Maybe a .22 would’ve bounced off the book no problem. But a fucking Desert Eagle? 50 cal? Those things are fucking cannons!!

        • el Gallinazo

A .22 solid point would probably have gone through the book as well. Would certainly not have “bounced off.” That’s why the CIA killers like to double tap with them.

Concrete evidence that SPSB………….Stupid People Shouldn’t Breed………..this is so wrong, on so many levels, I am at a loss for where to begin. No need, maybe. I think that says it all…..

  • RandyJ/ProudSurvivor

This dumb ass belongs in the Darwin Award Hall of Fame…

  • Cheryl Summers

can not believe the total lack of common sense….could have tried it first without him holding the book….can’t fix stupid

    • Phil_Ossifer

Some kinds of stupid we shouldn’t try to fix because it functions as a filter in the gene pool.

      • DontLikeWimps

Too late they produced 2 kids…

  • el Gallinazo

He is not eligible for the Darwin Award as he already reproduced. Shame.

  • elmysterio

In an article at RT about this, it says:

Perez told officers her boyfriend had been urging her to partake in the
video for a while, and showed her a different book that he had shot in
which the bullet hadn’t gone all the way through to convince her.

Therefore, it would seem likely that she believed the book would stop the bullet… unfortunately for all involved, it didn’t. That being said, I really don’t see what kind of justice is served by charging this woman with manslaughter. Seems punitive and pointless to me.

  • anonymous4u4me

The laws use to say with intent, this women will be punished enough everyday as she watches the children grow up knowing the father is not around because of a ridiculous video. She did not intend to harm him, she did not intend to kill him. he was the instigator and though she became a willing party there was still not intent to do harm. 30 onlookers stood by, are they being charged as accessories? no because again no intent, but the govt. needs again to flex its muscle and have you fear it to control you. Leave her in her misery she will suffer naturally. Prison use to be said to be for rehabilitation not punishment, does she need to be punished anymore, or even rehabilitated?

  • Gil G
