Get ready for pork and chicken to become luxury items.
Pork and chicken will join beef on the menu of expensive meats as drought and US ethanol policy combine in a corn âdisasterâ, the head of the worldâs largest pork producer has said, FT reports.
The cost of the main ingredients in animal feed, corn and soyameal, have set records this month as the worst drought in half a century and extreme heat damages crops in the US, the worldâs main surplus producer.
âBeef is simply going to be too expensive to eat. Pork is not going to be too far behind. Chicken is catching up fast,â said Larry Pope, chief executive of Smithfield Foods.
âIâll use the word catastrophe â thatâs my definition,â Pope told FT in an interview.
Pope warned US meat prices will rise by âsignificant double digits,â
Making matters worse is US government regulations. The US Department of Agriculture estimates almost 40 per cent of the US corn crop is consumed by ethanol refineries.
âItâs almost a government-mandated disaster here, which is distressing,â Pope said.

When will it be less expensive to just feed them on grass? I know it’s revolutionary. The main problem being that you can’t supply the USA with fast meat on grass.
Grass has been as dry as the corn and hay is going threw the roof I read on-line.
And we know that sea food is getting dangerous so that does not leave much.
People do not have to eat meat. If they do you can buy a butchered hog or cow local now before the price goes up.
Evie I agree. Now is the time to freeze or can some meats. You might also hunt this fall or freeze some wild fish. But consider learning to raise chickens or rabbits in your yard. You can raise some corn or grain (books in the library on small grain production) but they will eat most of your weeds ( if you have not sprayed your yard with chemicals in the last couple of years).
They need a protein source:an alfalfa bed can be grown for rabbits. Dried beans, worms, farmed fish, extra milk etc for the chickens. If you like to garden and have a bit of yard you can grow a lot of their food. Meat chickens only need 2-3 months depending on breed to reach killing size. You don’t feed them for the entire year. Rabbits are similar. For eggs chickens need to reach about 6 months old before they start laying. Then they must be feed adequate amounts of calories and protein to lay well but you don’t need them to max out and lay daily so plenty of garden grass, weeds, bugs, household waste etc are free and great for them.
Our grandmothers/fathers did not spend money on rabbits and chickens for meat/eggs. They made sure it was a cheap source of food for their families. It just takes a bit of planning. They are small animals and don’t need much space but they do need enough space to be healthy and happy and do need cleanliness. Remember to plan. And if you are not going to CARE for them do not get them. The are living creatures and deserve to be treated well until their deaths.
Two words for everyone “SOYLENT GREEN” cheap and plentiful if we use illegals, treacherous politicians and muslims.
