Police in the US Kill Citizens at over 70 Times the Rate of Other First-World Nations

In case you’ve been under a rock lately, it is becoming quite clear that police in the US can and will kill people, even unarmed people, even on video, and do so with impunity.

The tallying methods, or rather lack thereof, used by both the FBI and individual police departments to count the amount of people killed by police, have been shown to be staggeringly inaccurate.

However, this inability of the government to count the number of people it kills, has been met with multiple alternative means of calculating just how deadly the state actually is.

One of these citizen run databases, is the website www.killedbypolice.com. The site is basically a spreadsheet that lists every person killed by cops in the years 2013 and 2014. In addition to naming those killed, it also provides a link to media reports for each of the killings, age, sex and race if available.

The tally for 2014? 1,100 people killed by those sworn to protect. That is an average of three people a day.

Do not mistake this as saying that those who were killed were innocent. However, when we look at violent crime in this country, we can see that it is at an all time low.

While violence among citizens has dropped, violence against citizens carried out by police has been rising sharply.

When we look at citizens killed by police over the last two years, deaths have increased 44 percent in this short time; 763 people were killing by police in 2013.

As a comparison, the total number of US troops killed in Afghanistan and Iraq, in 2014 was 58.

Fewer soldiers were killed in war than citizens back home in “the land of the free” in 2014, by a large margin.

So why is that?

Is this some natural tendency of police in “free societies” to kill their citizens more, in an effort to maintain this freedom? Hardly, and hardly is the US a free country.

According to the 2014 Legatum Prosperity Index released in November, in the measure of personal freedom, the United States has fallen from 9th place in 2010 to 21st worldwide—behind such countries as Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, Uruguay and Costa Rica.

Other such rankings systems show the US as low as 46.

Let’s look at our immediate neighbors to the north, Canada. The total number of citizens killed by law enforcement officers in the year 2014, was 14; that is 78 times less people than the US.

If we look at the United Kingdom, 1 person was killed by police in 2014 and 0 in 2013. English police reportedly fired guns a total of three times in all of 2013, with zero reported fatalities.

From 2010 through 2014, there were four fatal police shootings in England, which has a population of about 52 million. By contrast, Albuquerque, N.M., with a population 1 percent the size of England’s, had 26 fatal police shootings in that same time period.

China, whose population is 4 and 1/2 times the size of the United States, recorded 12 killings by law enforcement officers in 2014.

Let that sink in. Law enforcement in the US killed 92 times more people than a country with nearly 1.4 billion people.

It doesn’t stop there.

From 2013-2014, German police killed absolutely no one.

In the entire history of Iceland police, they have only killed 1 person ever. After exhausting all non-lethal methods to detain an armed man barricaded in his house who actually shot 2 police officers, police were forced to take the 59-year-old man’s life. The country of Iceland grieved for weeks after having to resort to violence.

So why are police in the US so much more likely to kill than all of these other first world countries?

To better understand the multi-dimensional answer to that question, we can start by looking at the prison population of the US.

America imprisons almost twenty five percent of all people imprisoned in the world, although containing only about 5% of the worlds population, an extremely disproportionate share of people imprisoned globally.

The U.S. houses 2.3 million inmates, while China, a country with four times the population of the U.S., is a distant second with 1.6 million prisoners.

The war on drugs coupled with the military industrial state created by the US playing police of the world, has created a deadly combination.

A constant pursuit of new weaponry by the military has paved the way for the hand-me-down cycle of military gear to police departments.

The idea was that if the U.S. wanted its police to act like drug warriors, it should equip them like warriors, which it has—to the tune of around $4.3 billion in equipment, according to a report by the American Civil Liberties Union.

What we are calling the militarization of of police has already taken place, on a large scale. We are now seeing a domestic military, pretending to be a police force.

The time for peaceful resistance is now and more and more people are beginning to understand this.

Even retired police chiefs of large cities are watching from the sidelines with anxiety as they see their once, only slightly corrupt cities, turn into occupied militarized zones, ready to pounce on the first instance of civil opposition.

The most recent of former police chiefs coming to terms with the horrid consequences of their actions is Norm Stamper, former chief of the Seattle Police. Stamper was recently on the Colbert Report and Stephen Colbert asked him what happened during the infamous Seattle WTO protests in 1999 under his leadership. “Well we gassed non-threatening, non-violent protesters,” replied the former Chief of police for Seattle Washington.

If they’re going to try to kill you for doing nothing you might as well give them a real reason to try.

    • Larry New

yea! give them a real reason to take you out. Which they will unless you can outshoot them.

      • Cracker122049

So in your view it is better to just stand there and be shot and not defend yourself ,or am I missing something here? That use to be called a firing squad!

      • Musashi5000

Have you seen the way they shoot? Review the relatively recent episode of police marksmanship in group settings in NYC. They managed to shoot everyone but the criminal.

At any rate, you’re right, it’s best to just let your masters beat you to death or shoot you in the head for any or no reason…..just like a good slave. To think or do otherwise is too frightening to even contemplate. This is one of the reasons why the men of the West are, at present, useless.

Does a circumstance exist where you would be willing to fight “authorities” engaged in unjust and murderous actions? Do you believe the “authorities” are never wrong or evil? How many 20th century examples would you like?

    Some people just need killin’.
But really, look at the population of the US, the number of people (Citizens and non-Citizens) who are living in poverty or on Public Assistance (Welfare) programs who are uneducated and know little but a life of suffering and crime as a way of survival. The all-inclusive degeneration of values in America has contributed greatly to the progressive social problems and blight that we are seeing today.
Go take a ride-a-long with the police department of your nearest major metropolitan city and ask to ride in the worst, crime-ridden section of the city for your “research.” See how they live and what kinds of crimes occur every day in those areas – that are not reported or mentioned beyond the city limits. Its a war zone, and people are living in it every day. “One bad apple can spoil the whole basket,” so the “bad apples” are being culled – and our society, what it has become, needs those folks removed for the greater good. If the police don’t kill the criminals, the criminals will kill several others before eventually being killed by one of their own kind. How many innocent kids have to die in your neighborhood before you will shoot a drug dealer?

    • Jason Lanlkey

they did a good job on you. im very impressed. you got better programing then my computer.

    • L O

I went on a ride a-long for a school paper, after 2 hrs of watching cops treat everyone person they encountered like they were a terrorist with something to hide, I asked to be back to the station.. Cops are nothing but social bullies.. I have no respect for them.

  • Larry New

Police enforce laws. They aren’t there to protect citizens. That is why we in the U.S. have guns. You want protection, hire a body guard.

    • James

Yes but the police can not be allowed to gun down the good citizen. That is against the law and they need sent to prison for it. And when they do so on personal I Dont Likes. The law has nothing to do with it. Then let us shoot them back and be fair about it in the investigation as many American cops run on there personal I wants. Not the Law at all!

    • L O

The real threat comes in the form of a uniform.

  • LawNOrder

Judge Dredd… “I am tha law’ Judge, Jury and Executioner on the streets… whatever happened to due process? I guess that doesn’t matter with the ‘trash of society’ huh?

  • James

Because if the American police want to park on your private property and block your drive so you can not get your vehicle out of your garage or drive to use. And you speak to them about it they are allowed to and will try to murder you for it in America. Not that they need to be parked there at all just a Well I Want and I am A Cop deal. That is grounds for murdering you by police in America. And yes they will get away with it and let you know they will. If you do not flee the area and move away to please the likes of them. Such are the Geat Police America has today! Personal experiance with what America has as police I can say.

    • Larry New

You are full of something that smells . If you had that kind of personal experience with the police I’m guessing they know you pretty well and have pulled your record up a few times.

  • moovova

Sounds like the namby-pamby cop-haters need to move to Canada, the U.K., Germany or maybe Iraq. I hear that the cops in France aren’t even required to carry a weapon, so I’m sure that’s a safe country. Heck, gendarmes ride bicycles to the crime scene. Awesome!

“America imprisons almost twenty-five percent of all people in the world…”

Easy answer…let the prisoners out. They’re all obviously model citizens, so there shouldn’t be a problem there. Besides, if there IS a problem…all the namby-pambies will have moved to France or Iraq, right?

    • L O

Sounds like the namby-pamby badge ,licking, uniform worshipers are still at it….and the first ones in line up the ramp of the cattle cars.

  • Larry New

We could have the same amount of prisoners that China does if we would execute them like they do.

    • The Rifleman Next Door

I’m all for that….save ammo: use flamethrowers

  • rcotterill47

The USA has 300 million firearms in private ownership, roughly equal to the population. The UK has 2 million licensed firearms in a population of 60 million. In China the ratio is far lower again. Statistically a police officer is far more likely to encounter an armed offender in the US in almost anywhere in the world let alone the first world. It is small wonder that they use their firearms more frequently and sometimes mistakenly and it is the price you pay for the freedom to ownfirearms with few restrictions.
Don’t get me wrong I would gladly take the increased risk of being shot by police for the right to defemd my family, myself and others from attack by murderous thugs.
Be thankful you have that right and that your founders were wise enough to put it in the amendments!

    • Sammler

I live in Teller Co. Colo…..This county ranks 6th in the NATION is firearms owned per capita……8 murders in the last DECADE…..And an avg annual crime rate of 344….less than a crime a day…….And that includes ALL crime….theft to vandalism…and on up the scale….less that a crime a day in the country

  • The Rifleman Next Door

There are a lot stupid people out there in America who don’t understand when they have to follow a policeman’s orders not for the policeman’s safety, but FOR THEIR OWN SAFETY just in case badge-boy has a couple of mental screws loose.

Even though it requires temporary citizen-submission to an often less-than-intelligent and rude police officer, by this point all Americans… especially minorities that like to push-back at the most inopportune times…need to STFU and let their lawyer handle it afterwards or face possible summary execution.

NEVER trust a cop that you don’t know….especially if you’ve fucked up and thereby gotten their attention, you KNOW you’ve fucked up, and you’re too stupid to realize that you cannot intimidate them with your bullshit.

  • GoneWithTheWind

This is mostly about drugs and black and hispanic gangs. Most other cities referred to in this article do not have black and hispanic gangs and they take more effort to prevent drugs from ever crossing their borders then the U.S. does.
