Pardoned by Christie, woman pushes for change to US gun laws

The handgun that Shaneen Allen was carrying when she was pulled over on a New Jersey highway could have sent her to prison for years if not for a pardon from Republican Gov. Chris Christie.

Now the legal saga that kept the Pennsylvania mother of two in jail for 48 days has helped inspire a measure that could change handgun laws across the country. “Hopefully I’ll be at the White House next to (President) Trump signing this bill,” said Allen, who has become a face of the Republican effort to break down barriers to carrying concealed firearms between states. “Republicans put their money where their mouth was.”
The GOP-led House passed legislation this month that would allow gun owners with a state-issued concealed-carry permit to carry a handgun in any state that allows concealed weapons. The bill faces longer odds in the Senate, which didn’t vote on it before leaving for the year.

The measure has pit gun control advocates who say it would endanger public safety by effectively overriding states with tighter laws against gun rights activists who say it’s needed to allow gun owners to travel freely without worrying about conflicting state laws.

The measure is a top priority of the National Rifle Association and attorneys general from 23 Republican states wrote a letter in support of the measure. Seventeen Democratic attorneys general have called on Congress to give up the effort, the first significant action on guns in Congress since mass shootings in Nevada and Texas killed more than 80 people.

Even Christie, a Republican who has pardoned a number of out-of-state residents caught up in New Jersey’s strict gun laws, is against the change. Christie said it’s a state’s rights issue that the federal government should stay out of.

Allen’s story, along with others who have been caught up in similar circumstances, has helped the measure get this far. North Carolina Republican Rep. Richard Hudson, who authored the legislation, cited Allen’s story as an example about why the measure is needed in a speech on the House floor.

Christie also pardoned Florida and North Carolina residents who faced charges even though they legally possessed firearms in their home states. On Friday, he pardoned three people charged with handgun possession, including a man with permits to carry a gun in Pennsylvania and New York who was charged after he told police he had a gun following a car accident.

In another case, prosecutors dropped charges against a Delaware man who had a Tennessee concealed carry permit but faced felony gun charges in his new state. Allen, a phlebotomist, was driving on the Atlantic City Expressway when she was pulled over for making an unsafe lane change in October 2013.

She told the police officer that she was carrying a firearm and that she had a Pennsylvania-issued concealed carry permit. “I thought my license was just like a driver’s license,” she said. She spent 48 days in jail before she was admitted to a pretrial intervention program. In 2015, while gearing up for his failed presidential run, Christie interviewed her and eventually pardoned her.

Allen’s ordeal captured national attention from gun-rights advocates and prompted her to switch from a Democrat to a Republican and vote for Trump over Hillary Clinton. She says it also turned her into an advocate for the 2nd Amendment, including lobbying lawmakers to pass the measure and speaking at rallies.

“When you see the system go wrong in the life of a real person it becomes more compelling,” said GOP New Jersey Rep. Tom MacArthur, who met with Allen and voted for the legislation. “The woman did nothing wrong and yet her family was thrown into real chaos.”

The legislation includes some limits. It does not allow those barred by federal law — including convicted felons — from carrying concealed firearms across state lines. The measure also requires gun carriers to carry photo identification and a valid carry permit.

The measure also calls for strengthening the FBI database of prohibited gun buyers after the Air Force failed to report the criminal history of the gunman who killed more than two dozen people at a Texas church. Democrats called adding that a “cynical” maneuver aimed at forcing them to cast an unpopular vote against background checks.

Allen’s response to opponents echoes those of the GOP lawmakers who back the bill: Laws aimed at keeping weapons from people intent on committing a crime are essentially futile. “All I can say is I pray for them. Crime is everywhere,” she said. Every person that is carrying could possibly save your life. A crime could happen anywhere.”

  • endofwatchersbegan1/28/2011

Either way, the PEOPLE removed the ability of the Govt. to have ANY power over the right to bear arms, by and through the 2nd amendment. …”ANY” power. So whatever powers they have TAKEN unto themselves, are NULL and VOID. Even the creation of a 20 Trillion dollar debt is UNLAWFUL and TREASON. These gun laws only exist now because they are STRONG-ARMED upon the American People, by an Un-Constitutional CORRUPT Congress and State leaders.

    • WARNING! The double phony ‘Convention of States’ is geared, planned and ready to REPLACE our Constitution with the Communist Manifesto!!!

      • Karmas_halo

I disagree with you statement. It isn’t phony, I want changes made and those entrenched deep state folks are not going to change things for the better. Term limits, rules about printing money, rules about those suckers voting themselves exempt on things etc. We the people MUST take a stand and make these changes. It is a safety valve in the Constitution and we need to use it. If we don’t we can expect the same and a finite future.

Article V convention supporters seem to think they are oh! so clever when they accuse those of us who oppose an Article V convention of “fear mongering”.

Well, I graduated from “fearfulness” long ago – now I’m in the HORROR stage: Under the North American Union (NAU), Canada, the United States, and Mexico merge and a Parliament is set up over them. This was President George W. Bush’s plan, cooked up during 2005 at his ranch in Texas with the Prime Minister of Canada and the President of Mexico.

But in order to set this up, they need a new Constitution which transforms the United States from a sovereign nation to a member state of the NAU.

How do they get the new Constitution? At an Article V convention.

How do they get an Article V convention? Tell the American People that at an Article V convention, they can get Amendments to our existing Constitution which will “limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government”.

And, as ordinary citizens who support an Article V convention give daily proof, such tactics work. People don’t think – they follow what popular people tell them, and then they repeat it as if they know all about it. And they insult, revile and marginalize the people who do tell them the Truth (as they have been programmed by their Conditioners to do).

Americans don’t know that delegates to an Article V convention have “PLENIPOTENTIARY POWERS” and thus have the power (recognized in the 2nd paragraph of our Declaration of Independence) to throw off our present Constitution and establish a new one with a new (and easier) mode of ratification.

Americans don’t know that in Federalist Paper No. 40 (15th para), James Madison invoked this clause in the Declaration of Independence as justification for what they did at the federal convention of 1787: Instead of proposing Amendments to the Articles of Confederation (as they had been instructed to do), they wrote an entirely new Constitution which created a new government.

Americans don’t know that because of these plenipotentiary powers, Delegates to an Article V convention can do whatever they want. It doesn’t matter whether they were sent to the convention for “the sole and express purpose” of proposing a balanced budget amendment, or a term limits amendment, or a countermand amendment, or some other designated purpose – they are not bound by those spurious limitations.

Americans don’t know that “faithful delegates” laws are a joke: Not only do delegates have plenipotentiary powers and sovereign immunity for whatever they do; it is a simple matter to circumvent “faithful delegate” laws.

So that’s how a Constitutional Republic is destroyed and replaced by a global government.

You can read about the NAU here. Read the Task Force Report. Heidi Cruz was on the Task Force which wrote the report.

Questions: Is Senator Ted Cruz in on this plan to move us into the NAU? Is Governor Greg Abbott of Texas in on this plan to move us into the NAU? Is Lt. Gov Dan Patrick of Texas in on this plan?

People! Your guides are leading you astray and are confusing the path you should take. You better start using your own heads – and you better start doing it today. We are close to having Congress call an Article V convention. You better get with your State Legislators and educate them about the dangers and give them the Facts.

If you continue to refuse to hear the Truth; and if you continue to revile those who do tell the Truth, then the blood of a great many people will be on your head.

Hell is just around the corner. Look at Western Europe – how has the EU worked out? Americans better wise up now. Stop an Article V convention. Tell your State legislators to rescind the applications for a convention your State has already passed; and tell them not to pass any more applications. For an unofficial list (by State) of applications to Congress which have already been passed, go HERE.

Albuquerque – 19 March 2017 – Following Constitutional Process of State-by-State confirmation or rejection of Constitutional additions and subtractions: The original Bill of Rights contained only TEN (10) Articles – currently there are TWENTY SIX (26) – SIXTEEN (16) Amendments enacted into law since the original ratification. Amendment XI passed by Congress on March 4, 1794, ratified by the states February 7, 1795 via IN-State Conventions!

REFERENCE FACT: the Eighteenth (Amendment XVIII) to the United States Constitution, ratified on January 17, 1920 mandated nationwide Prohibition on alcohol. The Twenty-first (Amendment XXI), ratified on December 5, 1933, REPEALED the Eighteenth (Amendment XVIII), ratified on January 17, 1920 – WITHOUT the idiocy or necessity of any ‘convention’ other than State-by-State legislative processes.

          Amendment XXI, SECTION 3

This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by conventions IN the several States, as provided in the Constitution, within seven years from the date of the submission hereof to the States by the Congress.

QUOTE: “conventions IN the several States,” and “within SEVEN years from the date of submission” … simple and has worked for over 220 years!

WARNING! The above is what will NOT happen: the below is a summary of what WILL happen!

Gavel = This Convention of States will come to order!
Gavel = Is there a motion to be determined by this Convention of States?
Gavel = Motion #1, abolish the Constitution of these United States in its entirety!
Gavel = 100% Yea! 0% Nay! The Yeas have it, the motion is carried.
Gavel = Is there a motion to be determined by this Convention of States?
Gavel = Motion #2, enact the Communist Manifesto in its entirety as the Supreme Law of governance of these United States!
Gavel = 100% Yea! 0% Nay! The Yeas have it, the motion is carried.
Gavel = Is there a call to dismiss and disband this Convention of States?
Gavel = 100% Yea! 0% Nay! The Yeas have it, the motion is carried.
Gavel = This Convention of States is dismissed and closed.

Ok, so I have some research to do, however I am missing a vital piece…if not convention of states then what?
What peaceful solution is there? I don’t see one…I see a 2nd CW. Again, not afraid of that, if that is the only option so be it, I’m ready, willing and able. Although not as young as I used to be but ready non the less.
I agree with you about the horror, the crap those reps pull is horrifying and I hate the fact that we are simply left with the choice of one bad piece of dung or a different piece of dung. (dem/rep)
I’m not opposed to truth, but the issue is what truth, which one? The MSM has put out so much doo over the last 60 years it’s hard to dismantle and get to it.
Wish I could private message you to discuss more…my eyes are open, and so is my mind, but I think it’s hard to weed through the crap and boil it down to reality.

          • Karmas … the ‘convention of states’ is a sham from start to finish … read my documentation above for a quick review of how we’ve handled such things for well over 200 years !!!

There need to be 10 million 2nd amendment “American Militia Men” there to insure they uphold the BLOOD that bought the Constitution, and to make sure no funny business gets pulled over on the People. No 20 Trillion dollar debts on their backs.

If a state can take your constitutional rights away then they arnt rights. Time for a poll tax.

    It’s a trap!

  • Let’s see … all States recognize each other’s marriage laws and certificates, death certificates, auto licenses and ownership, aircraft right-of-ways, birth certificates … and the socialists have a case of the ass about legal firearms!!!

    • Skip

And the Supreme Court just issued a ruling (
Obergefell v. Hodges) about same sex marriage license. Legally issued in one state, all states (even those that don’t recognized same sex marriage), must recognize the marriage license.

(Obergefell overturned Baker and requires all states to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples and to recognize same-sex marriages validly performed in other jurisdictions)

I haven’t seen one recently, but have seen a number of stories about NJ Law Enforcement specifically looking for cars with out of state license plates – those states that allow gun possession. One in particular was a bout a Doctor who didn’t have his gun with him, but they almost literally tore his car apart bolt by bolt looking for it. Then there was another one where a passenger was flying through NJ as a connection. He declared his gun to the airline in his home state and the NJ airport police arrested him after the plane landed in NJ.
