Officer Who Killed Philando Castile Fired from Police Force

The Minnesota police officer who fatally shot Philando Castile last summer was fired from the St. Anthony Police Department last Friday after he was acquitted of all charges related to the shooting.

“The City of St. Anthony has concluded that the public will be best served if Officer Yanez is no longer a police officer in our city,” St. Anthony city officials said in a statement. “The city intends to offer Officer Yanez a voluntary separation agreement to help him transition to another career other than being a St. Anthony officer.”

The terms of that agreement have yet to be negotiated, but in the meantime Yanez will not return to active duty.

Yanez was cleared of second-degree manslaughter in court, as well as two lesser charges related to endangering Castile’s girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and her young daughter, who were in the car during the shooting.

The officer pulled over Castile, 32, in July of last year for a broken taillight. When the driver informed Yanez he was carrying a firearm, the officer quickly pulled out his service pistol and fired into the vehicle five times, killing Castile.

Yanez’s defense attorney said the officer “did what he had to do” during the trial, arguing Yanez feared for his life when Castile appeared to be reaching for his gun.

In recently released dash cam footage, Castile’s girlfriend can be heard saying that Castile was, in fact, reaching for his wallet to retrieve his I.D., as the officer requested.

The shooting has been widely criticized as another example of police misconduct, an issue that has gained much traction since the 2014 police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

According to the Star Tribune, Yanez had attended a police seminar called “The Bulletproof Warrior” in May of 2014, a series of classes that encouraged police officers to use their service weapon the second they feel they are in danger.

Critics have taken issue with the way many police officers are trained, arguing they are too quick to escalate situations to violence.

“Police training became very militaristic and it caused a lot of the problems that are going on in the nation,” said Michael Becar, executive director of the International Association of Directors of Law Enforcement Standards and Training.

An owner of the firm that provides the Bulletproof Warrior classes, Calibre Press, defended the company.

“Our mission is to save everyone’s lives,” said Calibre CEO Lisa Gitchell. “We go to bed every night knowing that we did the right thing. We train officers to treat people with dignity and respect.”

Footage from a Bulletproof Warrior course is depicted in a 2016 documentary film entitled “Do Not Resist,” wherein police trainer Dave Grossman gives his students a bit of extremely bizarre sexual advice, according to a report at the Washington Post:

In the class recorded for “Do Not Resist,” Grossman at one point tells his students that the sex they have after they kill another human being will be the best sex of their lives. The room chuckles. But he’s clearly serious. “Both partners are very invested in some very intense sex,” he says. “There’s not a whole lot of perks that come with this job. You find one, relax and enjoy it.”

While officer Yanez attended classes taught by Grossman’s business partner, Jim Glennon, the film excerpt raises questions about the training given to law enforcement officers and the way police respond to perceived threats.

Ironically, Philando Castile himself had taken gun safety courses with a Minnesota company called Total Defense in May of 2015. The course taught students to react calmly and to comply totally with with police in the case of a traffic stop with a firearm in the vehicle.

It appears both men were following their training, but only one of them walked away from the encounter.

he should have been on the firing line in front of a firing squad.

    • The firing line is where the the shooters stand in a firing line.

    • Are we any better than him if we deny him due process to do that?

      • Mike

never said deny him due process, just said that is where he belongs. He got off the hook because he was a cop. Any regular joe citizen would have been frying by now.

        • He got acquitted by the appropriate body. Police officers can never get a fair trial except by a literal jury of their peers, which, according to Lysander Spooner, was exactly that in earlier days.

Agents of the state waive their individual rights when they don their costumes – seeing as rights accrue to the individual rather than the state.

        • Where does the individual component appear in the Bill of Rights?

          • ReverendDraco✓ᵛᵉʳᶦᶠᶦᵉᵈ ᵃᶜᶜᵒᵘᶰᵗ

An individual ceases to be an individual when they become The State, at which point they lose their individual rights.

You’re either an individual or you’re The State – pick one.

          • What happens when they lose their agency?

  • Yanez should be sent to Academy with high recommendations.

    • Jeri Brace

Yanez should be put in front of a firing squad.

Lemme guess: disqus(ting)_3bro is defending the utterly indefensible. AGAIN. I got the cocksucker blocked, and can’t see what he spews anymore….aaaaaah……..BLISSSSSSSSSSS……………..

        • Cynical Old Bastard

Yep. Same here. All I see is “This User Is Blocked.”

He’s not welcome under our shade tree.

        • roger

          How do you block someone??

          • PoshZzola

Go to the right of a user’s name and a little arrow appears. Click the arrow and a menu comes down with two choices. One of them will be “block user.” Just click that and you are all set to go.

          • elbustaroyjetspeekerson

Thanx. You beat me to it.

          • PoshZzola

            No problem…

  • landy fincannon

It’s really not that hard. Just mandate the same rules of engagement the military MUST follow.

Upon further reflection, why is the the military held too such ridiculous standards?

  • CUgator

Yanez should have given Castille specific instructions to follow when he found out he was armed. Like “put your hands on the top of your head and interlace your fingers.” Then taken him out of the car, made him put hands on the police car, and removed the weapon. I think Castille would still be alive if Yanez had given the proper commands. This is my opinion.

    • Mechman29

Why should he have? The cop shouldn’t have had his gun out in the first place. Castille posed NO threat and informed the scum bag that he was armed, but just getting his id. No. Yanez should be in jail for the rest of his life.

      • elbustaroyjetspeekerson

No. This a case for “an eye for an eye” if there ever was one.

    • Cynical Old Bastard

Yes… that is your opinion and you are certainly entitled to it… as am I to mine.

You do bring up some very valid points in your comment and I entirely agree with you. The Officer did not follow proper procedure.

He just killed the dude and everybody called it good… so that kinda makes that point moot, huh?

There is no reason that an ordinary, law-abiding and armed citizen should be treated as a threat by any LEO unless that person displays an actual threat. Not an imaginary one. “I thought he was reachin’ ” doesn’t cut it. I need to see a weapon coming out before I kill you.

I think you’re missing the point of the story here.

Have ya ever heard of Lester Dent? AKA Kenneth Robeson?

He wrote a series about a fella named “Doc Savage.” A most amazing man by by all accounts. Trained from birth to right wrongs and save innocent maidens in distress. A man of bronze.

His philosophy was that a man who relied upon firearms as a first resort instead of the very last resort never learned to think. Instead… he relied upon the firearm to solve his problems instead of his mind.

I’m afraid ol’ Lester and Doc were correct.

Snicker … He’s probably a toilet bowl technician in some crappy restaurant now.

  • elbustaroyjetspeekerson

    • Mechman29

Low octane is better. burns easier…

      • elbustaroyjetspeekerson

Really? How’s that work? Sounds bass-ackwards.

        • Cynical Old Bastard

Not sure how it works but he’s correct to a point. It’s not so much the easier part as it is the length of burn Had an ol’ boy explain it to me one time and it has to do with how the molecules are arranged. How many eights of tanes there are or something.

Personally, I’d use a 50/50 mix of diesel and used motor oil. Stack up some tires, pile up some brush, and have a barbecue by the bonfire.

Now if ya really wanna get mean I have some pretty high-powered Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) which I use for making cold process soap. Eat the skin right down to the bone if’n ya ain’t careful.

Attention passengers! We are out of lifeboats. The crew had priority.

For you, it’s every man for himself.

    • Cynical Old Bastard

      Nice one.

  • RandyJ/ProudSurvivor

I can only conclude that if this nations police officers are attending seminars with titles such as “The Bulletproof Warrior” there must be a great deal of emphasis placed on the warrior portion of the training. Why aren’t they training in courses titled “The Constitutional, Ethical Use of Power and Authority: You are NOT a God”? Oh yeah, I forgot. Fuck the Constitution and the citizenry, it’s all about officer safety…..

    • elbustaroyjetspeekerson

The “bulletproof” part is the very most telling….

  • Cynical Old Bastard

That’s the ticket. Cut him loose with a slap on the wrist. I’m actually thinking of starting up a rug and broom store on Amazon… just for these pesky little situations. Should be rich and on a cruising sailboat within… say… a week.

If an ordinary citizen kills he’s on a gurney ride straight to the needle. If one of them kills one of us in what amounts to cold blood they are acquitted and fired (maybe). I guarantee you that if our eyes weren’t on them and we weren’t in such a state of high-alert that this story would not have even reached a county paper.

Now, if this was an actual accident (doubtful) then this officer played hooky on the day they taught the most the most important part of firearms responsibility there is… when NOT to fire your weapon.

Folks, what we have going on here is a disconnect. They are no longer hiring people who can think on their feet and make good judgement calls in high-stress situations. Instead, they are hiring the obedient zombies they created.

And these zombies are more dangerous than anything that ever came out of Hollywood.

  • jimmy joe

So, what the family needs to do now is find out where this thing lives, and since it is no longer “protected” by a very corrupt system, and proceed to fuck it up!! Making sure the only ‘witnesses are other family members, that way, there are no witnesses!!

    • Pat Taylor ╚(ಠ_ಠ)=┐

Take the piece of crap into the middle of the desert knocked out cold … At the site, strip him naked then insert a length of garden hose up his ass, which has a piece of razor wire inside, extract the hose, leaving the razor wire … Drive away leaving the scum with a fatal surprise up his ass, when he comes to, the first urge will be to remove the razor wire from his ass.

  • saxa

and he better not be allowed to join ANY police department ever again

  • Jeri Brace

if any other police department hires yanez people should protest in massive numbers in front of the police department that hired him to send them a message
that the kind of deadly tactics used by this punk with a badge & a Gun will not be tolerated by the community. Yanez IS the enemy!

  • Jeri Brace

it needs to be mandated that police officers carry liability insurance, just like a Surgeon has to carry malpractice insurance because someone’s life is in their hands. do this and you will weed out all the bad cops that can’t get insurance when there are too many “incidents” on their records.

    • Pat Taylor ╚(ಠ_ಠ)=┐

As well as professional licensing with absolute transparency allowing all of their records to be publicly reviewed.
They must be held accountable for their actions taken while in service to their corporate masters

  • Pist-Off

I think that the phrase, ” I feared for my life”, is being used by a man that now has a REAL reason to say so.

    • elbustaroyjetspeekerson

      Brilliant. Bravo!

    • Jeri Brace

yea i agree. that phrase is getting tiresome and used all too often as an excuse for their misconduct.

    • Pat Taylor ╚(ಠ_ಠ)=┐

In the front of the 80’s, the phrase of the day was “suicide by cop”.

  • Glenn Turner

Lets see how long he lasts now that he’s no longer protected by a badge!!!
