A new campaign ad from Mitt Romney has Nancy Pelosi on the defensive. In it, Romney asserts that during key stimulus package negotiations House majority leader Nancy Pelosi hit the mute button so that she could continue her conversation with Senator Harry Reid, ignoring everything President Obama had to say.
Pelosi denies the allegation, stating that she never muted the President:
On Sunday House minority leader Nancy Pelosi, D-SF, rebuffed her starring role in an ad by GOP nominee Mitt Romney, denying that she ever cut any president off from speaking and calling the ad ‚Äúan act of desperation.‚ÄĚ
‚ÄúAs Speaker and as Democratic Leader, any call from the President would be treated with great formality and respect,‚ÄĚ Pelosi said in a statement issued Sunday. ‚ÄúThere was absolutely no situation in which either President Bush or President Obama were cut off from speaking. I respect the office of the President and the office of the Speaker, including the historic nature of any communication between these two offices.‚ÄĚ
Her office also re-issued statements she made during a Politico breakfast at the Democratic convention:
‚Äú[T]hat didn‚Äôt happen,‚ÄĚ Pelosi said. ‚ÄúFirst of all, whatever friendship you may have with an individual, when the president of the United States is having a conversation with the Speaker of the House and the leader in the Senate, ‚Ķ it‚Äôs a formal situation; it‚Äôs history. Every call is history. ‚Ķ [M]ostly, I clear the room when I‚Äôm talking to the president. I don‚Äôt want anybody hearing one side of a [conversation]. I clear the room and then I take notes ‚Ķ ‚Äú[T]he president is not a person who‚Äôs long on the phone ‚Ķ [I]f we‚Äôre going to have a small-talk conversation, that will be another conversation.
‚ÄúSo, I don‚Äôt even have any idea of where they could ever have gotten that ‚Ķ [It would have been so] disrespectful and ‚Ķ¬† I viewed every one of those calls ‚Ķ as history.¬† It wasn‚Äôt Nancy and Barack. It was the president of the United States and the Speaker of the House.‚ÄĚ
