Marijuana: So Evil, the U.S. Gov’t Owns the Patent “Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants”

Uruguay marijuana

On January 1st, Colorado became the first state in the nation to legally sell marijuana for recreational purposes.

Hoax stories tell of blood raining in the streets of the state following the legalization, while Internet memes everywhere are pointing out the fact that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration admits legal prescription drugs kill 100,000 Americans every year (while marijuana has never been linked to any overdose deaths).

This is also going to be a financial boon for the state, considering all the taxes it will rake in (an estimated $67 million a year, not to mention the millions of dollars saved in law enforcement costs for enforcing marijuana prohibition), and many are calling it a first step in nationwide legalization.

Regardless of whether or not you personally agree with marijuana legalization, would it surprise you to know that the U.S. government, via the Department of Health and Human Services, actually owns a patent on the use marijuana’s primary active ingredients as both “antioxidants” and “neuroprotectants”?

It’s U.S. Patent #6,630,507 titled “Cannabinoids as Antioxidants and Neuroprotectants,” dated October 7, 2003:

Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia.

Seeeerioussssslyyyyy dude. Marijuana is used to treat actual diseases and disorders; it hasn’t been shown to cause them.

Parents Matt and Paige Figi would certainly agree in regard to marijuana’s neuroprotectant effects; their six-year-old was diagnosed with the rare and often deadly Dravet Syndrome. She was having upwards of 300 seizures a week. After putting her on all manner of pharmaceuticals, the parents finally turned to medicinal marijuana. Now their daughter might have one seizure a week (but sometimes she doesn’t have any).

Medicinal marijuana, already legal in 20 states, allows people to use it for treatment of everything from chronic pain to glaucoma to arthritis to offsetting the effects of harsh cancer treatments. Speaking of, studies have also shown that cannabinoids have anti-cancer properties as well.

Meanwhile, marijuana still accounts for half of all illicit drug violations and billions spent annually in law enforcement costs in a country that puts more people in prison per capita than any other nation in the world, with nearly 700,000 people arrested per year for marijuana possession alone. In a recent study on the racially biased aspect of marijuana prohibition, the ACLU noted that the drug is actually overcriminalized, as cops averaged one pot bust every 37 seconds just in 2010; further studies revealed that more marijuana arrests did not contribute to less violent crime overall.

When put in contrast with the fact that alcohol, perfectly legal in the U.S., is responsible for 4% of deaths every year worldwide — more than AIDS, tuberculosis or violence — the claim that marijuana prohibition is ultimately in the public interest is unconvincing at best.

cannabis kills cancer but the feds don’t want ya to know because it’s big money for big phama. Just like they don’t want to have us know about free energy because of big oil, and other bad energies.

    • Mamzer_FEMA_REGION_IV

Cannabis has been also shown to cause cancer

      • Undecider

So does sodium fluoride but that’s legal.

        • Mamzer_FEMA_REGION_IV

Yep and cigarettes too. I see no reason the make pot illegal. Then again I think autoeroticasphixiation should be practiced by everyone in Washington.

      • You are dumber than those at the cnn post. there are over 10,000 replies there.
Try and tell those in line at the Denver pot shops. We are tired of stupid brainwashed people talking about something they don’t know anything about. Go away.

        • Mamzer_FEMA_REGION_IV

I am for legalizing it. Most libertarian are. Please smoke all you want.

      • Rolly Joger

I agree it should be legal but it is far from harmless. If you family has a genetic predisposition to bipolar disorder, avoid it at all costs

    • Lose your home assets children and jail time or execution. That should be avoided at all costs. I have been following a cnn blog. It is amazing how stupid and brainwashed the anti pot people are.
The harm is from it being illegal.
I call B.S. to you and your stupidity.

      • Mamzer_FEMA_REGION_IV

too funny, Smoke away…take a big bong hit I personally want pot to be legal everywhere but permit employers to discriminate and only hire those that can pass hair follicle tests. Can you say, “do you want fries with that?”

      • Stace325

Juries have the power of nullification but judges, prosecutors, do not inform them of this power.

“Jury nullification occurs when a jury returns a verdict of “Not Guilty” despite its belief that the defendant is guilty of the violation charged (law umkc edu…).”

“Josie the Outlaw” (YouTube) explains, as she discusses the true duty of the juror to conscientiously acquit through jury nullification when the law is unjust or unjustly applied.

No Victim – No Crime as far as I’m concerned. I wonder if there’s a way for an average citizen to inform jury members of this power. Just thinking…

Disclaimer: I’m not promoting above sources provided. I did watch Josie the Outlaw video. She’s not bad to look at, and tells it like it is in less than 15 minutes.
        Peace Out

    • Stace325

Are you saying bipolar disorder is genetic? What types of medical test are given to determine a person has bipolar disorder? For example, blood is tested for diabetes, HIV, anemia, etc.. Just asking…

      • Mamzer_FEMA_REGION_IV

There is an understanding that it is genetic in psychology. I think it is familial which does not necessarily mean genetic

        • Stace325

          Thx for responding.

Why should people with bipolar disorder and their family members, avoid smoking pot?

          • Mamzer_FEMA_REGION_IV

It has been a while since I studied genetics in college. I am an electrical engineer now. What I believe (I have no degree in genetics) is that there is a gene that predisposes people to symptoms exhibited by people that have been diagnosed with Bi Polar disorder. The allele can be impacted by certain stressors or not. You may have the gene for a particular disease but it may never become evident by symptoms. Certain things cause the allele to go active. I am 99% convinced that happened with my daughter. Other factors later on could have made that allele go active but that is more speculative than my claim that marijuana is a catalyst for early mental illness onset.

          • Stace325

Sorry to hear about your daughter. If things don’t improve and you’ve exhausted the AMA avenue you may want to consider a Naturopathic Doctor. I don’t think they prescribe pot. They work the bodies natural ability to heal; by balancing out chemical imbalance for example. I prefer Naturopathic Doctor’s because they treat the whole self. It’s a one-stop Doc. And homeopathic remedies because its Gods medicine. I just never understood vaccines or how treating cancer with cancer causing chemo and radiation made sense. I’m not suggesting pots the answer to cancer or for bipolar disorder – I don’t know.
Your daughter’s fortunate to have a father that is there and cares so deeply. I’m sure she will get better. I wish you both the best. Peace Out

          • anonoman

Whether your daughter was sick or not she shouldn’t be smoking it if the goal is health. You/she should be using cannabis oil for healing. Also, it is a neuroprotectant(US patent# 6630507) so even if you smoke it, a neuroprotectant cannot possibly “burn your brains up” so what you said is 100% false.

p.s. – It is ALWAYS medically advantageous.

    • cptplanet

You are mistaken. Bipolar disorder is treatable with cannabis.

      • מַמְזֵ֖ר

Please, that is like treating alcoholism with Scotch or Smack with methadone

You just blew a hole in this article a mile wide. I doubt it is reliable

    • I’m pretty sure your sources are propaganda and lies that we have been fighting for decades.

      • Mamzer_FEMA_REGION_IV

You are not sure of anything. Is your ex sure she will get child support this month?

  • Barn Cat

Pot is for losers. It lowers IQ. It makes you look 60 when you’re 45. All you idiots out there who think you’re not dumb enough should start smoking it.

Smoking yes. Cigarettes are legal so I see no issue in that regard. People should be allowed to do stupid things to their own bodies

google it yourself, I know first hand but there is plenty peer reviewed studies done

    • Burrow Owl

      How predictable.
You made the assertion, therefore the ball in is your court.

FYI, I’ve been interested in this subject since the late ’70’s- and have spent a great deal of time researching and studying any and all information that I can find.
Oddly enough, the only ‘studies’ that I’ve seen that advance the claims you’ve made in this forum have not only failed to be vetted by the peer review process but, upon even the most superficial of examinations, fail to conform to the basic tenets of the scientific process.

      • Mamzer_FEMA_REGION_IV

We know all about peer review B..S…every gay troll brings up. I have a nice list of peer reviewed stuff that was crapola. Love to share it all with trolls using those simple words to discredit my integrity F off

Then all those cancer patients on medical marijuana have been cured praise God! Wonder drug saved how lives according to gay peer reviews. Pot does make anal sex easier they claim

  • Stace325

Monsanto! I think they are hanging on to the patent while they figure out a way to genetically modify the seed. Until then, it will be illegal. That’s just my guess.

So everyone smoking medicinal marijuana has been cured! Wow no more cancer deaths folks. Smoke a joint and live!

phoenix is one case where someone benefited. Funny my daughter seizures now from welbutrin given to her by an idiot. Of course if she never smokes pot she would not have been all all those antidepressants.anti anxiety meds in the first place

Gave pot to my dad who was dying from lung cancer. Doctors would not give him any pain meds becuase the say his lungs would quit….yet he smoked the pot for pain relief…he died of lung cancer

incorrect, want to see a correlation between marijuana use and suicide

Actually it is. employers should be free to hire/fire whomever they want for any reason

    Snake oil,

Money back guarantee? The cancer business, also snake oil too (I will give you that) is a several billion dollar a year industry. If there was a cure Rick Simpson would be murdered

    • anonoman

Snake oil? Did you go to his website? See any ads on there? Let me know if you can find 1 thing on there for sale, it would be news to me. He shows you HOW to make this stuff. It will heal anything it touches, inside or out of the body. You must know a trustworthy source or make it yourself. I just today gave some to a man with basil cell carcinoma. He won’t have basil cell carcinoma in 1 month, his skin will return to normal with hardly a mark depending on how bad it was. I told him to take pictures because, of course, like you, nobody will believe it. It’s still true though lol.

      • Mamzer_FEMA_REGION_IV

I will bookmark it: you are persistent
I only glanced at it as your correct surmised. You do know how much a pound would cost lol.

        • anonoman

Thank you. This is for healing, nothing else. This man risked it all to bring us this information. Run from the cure is his video, it’s on youtube and his website. Please watch it and tell those you love about it. Thanks for listening, you will not regret it.

  • Tatiana Covington

Actually, it’s a species of plant.

  • Tatiana Covington

Those who would legalize, are assuming that they must ask for others’ permission and abide by others’ decisions.

Choose for yourselves and the hell with everyone else.

  • anonoman

My anecdotal claims are true for me as well as they are for my other half and all of the others out there doing the same thing. When you flood the body with cannabinoids, you don’t get sick. Those people you know are either not using medical-grade, are smoking it, or are not consuming enough to correct their cannabinoid deficiency.

I watched the 8 minute version. I do not have enough internet to watch the 54 minute unless I go somewhere for free WIFI. Here is my issue. Listening to those testimonials, it makes hemp sound like the Tree of Life. It cured too many other things like snoring. Maybe the natural relaxing affect caused by THC might make people less anxious and then their body can self heal? Proof is always in the pudding. Next person I know that gets cancer, they can try it out.

A real study has to be done and a hate to say it but it will have to be reviewed by several experts. There should be a plenty of hippies in academia to review but for credibility you will need natural born skeptics like me. We call ourselves Boreans.

    Affirmative action too
