Lunch Lady Called the Cops on 8th Grader Who Paid for Chicken Nuggets with a $2 Bill

2bill

When 13-year-old eighth grader Danesiah Neal attempted to pay for her lunch at Christa McAuliffe Middle School in Houston, Texas, the lunch lady called the cops on her.

Why?

Because she dared to use a $2 bill.

(Insert gasping and panic here.)

Via ABC News 13:

“I went to the lunch line and they said my $2 bill was fake,” Danesiah told Ted Oberg Investigates. “They gave it to the police. Then they sent me to the police office. A police officer said I could be in big trouble.”

Not just big trouble. Third-degree felony trouble.

And that’s just one of eight counterfeiting charges investigated against high- and middle-school students at Fort Bend ISD since the 2013-2014 school year.

Eight counterfeiting charges at just two schools? Just how big is the teen counterfeiting crime racket?

The school ended up calling the girl’s grandmother Sharon Kay Joseph, who was informed her granddaughter may have committed a third-degree felony.

The officials asked, “‘Did you give Danesiah a $2 bill for lunch?’ He told me it was fake,” she said.

Even ABC News is incredulous at how ridiculous the hardcore investigation into this “crime” got:

Then the Fort Bend ISD police investigated the $2 bill with the vigor of an episode of Dragnet, even though at that school 82-percent of kids are poor enough to get free or reduced price lunch.

The alleged theft of $2 worth of chicken tenders led a campus officer — average salary $45,000 a year — to the convenience store that gave grandma the $2 bill. Next stop — and these are just the facts — the cop went to a bank to examine the bill.

Finally, the mystery was solved: The $2 bill wasn’t a fake at all. It was real.

The officer traced the bill back to a convenience store and then the bank before someone was finally told that oh, by the way, YES, there is such a thing as a $2 bill. Supposedly the bill was so old (1953) that the counterfeit marker the lunch lady apparently uses on every bill just to be sure (you know, those darn counterfeiting middle schoolers) wouldn’t work on it.

She also has eyeballs and a brain she could’ve used, but apparently common sense was just too much to ask for.

At least the cop gave the $2 back.

“He brought me my two dollar bill back,” Joseph said. He didn’t apologize. He should have and the school should have because they pulled Danesiah out of lunch and she didn’t eat lunch that day because they took her money.”

Joseph said something needs to change so kids don’t have felonies looming over their heads for minor crimes — or actions that aren’t even crimes at all.

“It was very outrageous for them to do it,” she said. “There was no need for police involvement. They’re charging kids like they’re adults now.”

Because we all know those teenage counterfeiters are always trying to get away with the high crime of stealing middle school cafeteria chicken nuggets with a fake $2 bill.

Sounds like the lunch lady and the cop just did not know what types of currency exist in this country and, instead of attempting to find out, they immediately went police state on a 13-year-old, school-to-prison-pipeline style.

They’re so eager to arrest kids for anything in our “schools”. Just such a pathetic state of affairs in this country. While their little “mistake” is no big deal to them, and obviously the cop didn’t apologize for treating a middle schooler like a felon, just imagine how the utter stupidity of this event will impact this poor little girl for the rest of her life.

That’ll teach her for legitimately trying to purchase her school lunch with cash!

If it were my kid, that lunch lady would be buying her lunch for the rest of her life.

    • and sipping her own lunch through a straw………

      • You would commit battery because of simple ignorance? I hope that you will someday be beat up for being so silly.

        • Heavy Metal

A LOT more batteries would solve a LOT more problems with “simple ignorance”. I’ve solved quite a few cases of “simple ignorance” myself; a good boot up the rear gives the brain cells better oxygen saturation in some cases.

False accusations of a crime should carry the same penalty as the crime being accused. So I don’t think the lunch lady should have her teeth knocked out, she should merely go to prison for felony counterfeiting. Same with lunatic passengers on planes accusing other passengers of being terrorists.

    • If you were fired for every small ignorance that you demonstrated, you probably would be running a truck patch instead of a tractor-trailer.

None of my small ignorances resulted in someone’ s child being traumatized by a man with a gun.

      • Frank

People aren’t “convicted” in a civil suit. They have judgments either for or against them. And, anyway, “mens rea” doesn’t mean a damn thing anymore in this country. They just care about your actions, not the reasons for them.

        • I certainly hope that you aren’t admitted to the bar in any state on this planet.

I used to give my kids $2.00 bills everyday for lunch. Lunch was 2 bucks and nobody could steal their money because no one else used 2 dollar bills. I used to get a big bundle at the bank every month. To this day my bank saves everyone they get till they sell them to me.

    • They can be bought by the bundle, fresh from the bureau of engraving press. Your bank is playing you for a fool.

      • Frank

How are they “playing him for a fool?” If they let him exchange two $1 bills for a $2 bill, what is the problem? If you want uncut sheets of them to frame and hang on the wall, contact the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing. If you want bills you can spend, go to your bank.

        • you come to us with 16 quarters, 8 dimes, and 4 nickels, we can give you a 5 dollar bill. How does First CityWide make money doing this? The answer is simple: Volume!!!

So both the lunch lady and the cop was too stupid to realize it was real currency. Wow …that is sad. People that can’t think for themselves.

Same thing happened to me at McDonald’s. Both the register kid and his immediate supervisor floor manager had never seen a $2 bill and would not let me buy food with it. Stupid millennials.

  • mayday911us.

Will the two dollar bill is legal tender it’s not produced anymore. What if I’m not mistaken doesn’t pen work on the bill to see if it’s real or fake.

But this is also liked oh Sacajawea dollars which is a coin that the United States produced and left in a warehouse for years. The problem is there’s not a space in the register to actually put it so that’s why they get really agitated. Then they have to count it that’s why the people at gas station to get really pissed when you pay in quarters. But legally they have to except it it’s legal tender. That’s why people pay their taxes and change.

  • mdogg0724

You mean to tell me two grown American citizens didn’t know there was a such thing as a $2 bill? This world is becoming so bizarre and ridiculous, I’m beginning to wonder if I’m in the Twighlight Zone.

    • florida cracker

the magic pen said it was fake so they HAD to get the police involved

    • BW83

I’d be willing to bet a large portion of grown adults don’t know there’s such a thing as a $2 bill, maybe not large, but higher than one would think. They’re not exactly a commonly used denomination.

Again, let’s look at the area it happened in as well. The lunch lady works in a poor district where most children qualify for free lunches…..not a stretch to assume she’s poor, and local, as well. Poor people aren’t renowned for their knowledge of money. I’d bet she didn’t know $1000 dollar bills were a real thing either.

The whole situation is ridiculous for sure, and the involved adults blew it out of proportion. The girl and grandmother both deserve an apology.

  • Rick E.

The 13 yr old girl mistakenly assumed that she was dealing with intelligent humans at that school! She made a significant mistake…obviously!

  • RandyJ/ProudSurvivor

Now that a child has been unnecessarily humiliated and threatened with imprisonment by police state minions, what sort of justice can and should be meted out for both the lunch lady and the cop? There is ignorance and then there is willful, mean spirited ignorance. I’ve just about lost any faith in the possibility of restoring the Republic….

Society is too stupid to survive.

  • SP_88

So basically, a stupid woman who doesn’t know that two dollar bills exist called a stupid cop who doesn’t know that two dollar bills exist and a lot of time was wasted, at taxpayer expense, and a school student didn’t get to eat lunch because of this epic stupidity.
If someone was going to counterfeit money, don’t you think that they would choose to counterfeit a bill that was; larger than two dollars, something that existed(I know that they do exist, but dumb and dumber apparently didn’t think so), and not something that would get immediate attention? It doesn’t even make sense that they thought a crime was committed.
Words fail to accurately describe just how very stupid these people are. And it’s a shame that this student had to suffer through their stupidity. Ignorance knows no bounds.

  • uleaveuswithoutoptions

The problem was that the child attempted to PAY for her lunch, rather than taking a “free lunch” paid for by US taxpayers.
I know a number of teachers who work in various Texas border towns, and they’re thoroughly disgusted that the majority of their students cross the border from Mexico into Texas in order to obtain the free breakfasts and lunches that US schools provide.
Instead of worrying about a child paying for her lunch, perhaps we should all be concerned with the theft of millions of dollars of free breakfasts/lunches served to the children of illegal aliens?
Why do I think that English was not the first language of the lunch lady and the security guard?

  • OldPoorRichard

It appears that a majority of U.S. schools have been configured as prison camps under armed guard where kids are conditioned to be terrified of authority, like the happy citizens of North Korea.

Should I be relieved that there are no cops anywhere in my town’s school system, or worried that my daughter will not be conditioned to be properly compliant and thus be murdered on a prison campus once she goes off to college?
