Gas Plummets to 46 Cents a Gallon in Small Michigan Town

For those of you old enough to remember a time when gas was cheap, you probably experience plenty of nostalgia every time you watch an old movie, and catch a glimpse of a gas station with sub-dollar prices. Believe it or not, you can experience those prices once again if you happen to be passing through Michigan. For the first time in years, there are several gas stations in the area where you can buy a gallon of gas for less than a dollar.

The slump in global oil prices has already pulled prices down across the country, but three gas stations in Houghton Lake, Michigan are involved in price war that has driven prices even lower. The local Citgo Station is selling for 95 cents a gallon. The Beacon and Bridge gas station is selling fuel for 47 cents a gallon, and the Sunrise Marathon is selling for 46 cents a gallon. Not surprisingly, there have been long lines at these stations all weekend, and police officers have been deployed to direct traffic.

And if you can believe it, oil prices may still have a ways to go, with some experts predicting that it could fall to $20 per barrel or less. One Koch Brothers owned refinery claimed that they would need to be paid 50 cents a barrel to break even on a low-grade oil, that would have netted them nearly $50 a barrel last year. It’s safe to say that the gas station situation in Houghton Lake may be replicated in other parts of the country in the near future, so enjoy the low gas prices while they last.

  • This reminds me of when I was the manager of a service station during the OPEC embargo in the early 70’s. A gallon of regular and a pack of cigarettes were both 38 cents. Based on the adjusted value of the dollar, gasoline is much cheaper now than it was then. Cigarettes are much more.

But you don’t use cigarettes to power your car…..just fuel your habit HA HA!!! I remember those days too.

They didn’t say they’d need to be paid .50 – they said they would pay YOU .50 to take their oil.

Anyone who believes it is a good economic sign when gas goes from over $4 to under a dollar in the span of a year, is crazy. I won’t say the sky is falling-but this isn’t a good sign.

  • twinkiedooter

Years ago when I was young gas was about 50 cents a gallon. Not much fuss was made about it like it is now. When it hit $1 a gallon about 99 or 2000 I thought that was bad. Now with prices having reached $4 a gallon (which was unreal) having gas prices low again just MAY make a difference in the economy versus it starts a chain reaction and trashes our economy.

Nice story but those are not the price of the gas in that town.I looked the other day too when a Fox network ran the story. Went on the Gas Buddy and did not see any price to match this. Then it was 1.47 at the lowest station.Went today and look and the price has gone up. Here’s the link if you want to take a look for yourself.http://www.gasbuddy.com/GasPriceMap?search=48629

    • Maybe there are no reporters for gasbuddy there. Looking at a database with no recent input is hardly representative of reality.

      • SWPRSR

Gas buddy is updated by users a few times every day. The price I was looking at had just been updated an hour before I saw it. Maybe you didn’t even go look and also maybe don’t know how to use the site/gasbuddy. So if gas buddy is updated a few times a day then how is that not relevant.Like I had said before,it was 1.47 when the story first appeared on Fox and then the next day was even higher. The Pic. I saw of it being .47 cents on the first story was more than likely a error of who post prices on the outside station sign.

        • Gasbuddy suffers from the same problems that wikipedia does, for the same reasons. Unless one patronizes the location, the posted price is the one reported. One would have to burn a LOT of gasoline to have to patronize all of the locations one reports.

          • SWPRSR

You still don’t know how GasBuddy works do you.The prices posted are from Gasbuddy users who have the app. and buy their gas from the said/posted station. And some even post prices from the station they drive by on their way to work. Today the price is 1.31 at Beacon and Bridge Market posted by:

So in the four days since I saw the first story on this the price of gas at this very same station has changed 4 times that I have looked. Here, call them up: 1 (989) 422-6147 and see if they ever sold it at 0.47.I know you won’t just like you didn’t even check out GasBuddy = (…………………)

          • “And some even post prices from the station they drive by on their way to work.” Like I said, they didn’t have to buy any to report the price, and if they didn’t, they went by the sign. I get how gasbuddy works just fine, having been a frequent reporter when I was longhaulling. You seem to be having a problem with understanding plain english, though.
