Destitution and Hunger In Greek Prisons: “Not Even One Grain of Rice Left In Warehouses”

All indications suggest that basic services in Greece have begun to break down, with reports from several Greek prisons and military installations indicating that prisoners are malnourished and starving. Food shortages caused by austerity related spending cuts and truck stoppages are also reportedly reducing daily rations for soldiers stationed in the area of Corinth, Greece.

We may very well be seeing the cracks in a society on the verge of complete meltdown.

At a time when the entire country is being tested by the economic crisis, some people are quite literally on the verge of destitution and hunger. At a time when the empty state coffers can not support any concept of a welfare state, with “frozen” financing towards education and health, the prison system could not be an exception.

The financing for many prisons has decreased to a minimum for some months now, resulting in hundreds of detainees being malnourished and surviving on the charity of local communities.

The latest example is the prison in Corinth where after the supply stoppage from the nearby military camp, the prisoners are at the mercy of God because, as reported by prison staff, not even one grain of rice has been left in their warehouses. When a few days earlier the commander of the camp announced to the prison management the transportation stoppage, citing lack of food supplies even for the soldiers, he shut down the last source of supply for 84 prisoners. The response of some Corinth citizens was immediate as they took it upon themselves to support the prisoners, since all protests to the Justice ministry were fruitless.

The prisons in Patra and Alikarnassos have also been experiencing food supply problems lately, as the prisoners who cannot afford to buy food from the prison canteen are left without food.

    Not surprising at all.

This is austerity. The elite think it is ok for some to starve as long as someone is risen into middle class in an undeveloped nation. Eventually where will the money come from for the underdeveloped nations as it all comes from gov. The citizens fed their own prisoners? The medis portrays them as thugs.

    • http://www.ifamericansknew.org Honest Hal

      @Evie,

If you want to see what this really is look into the food wars/famine created by our best and brightest in Wall Street. You’ll have to do a little digging but you’ll be marveled by their creativity and ingenuity. Our role models make us all so proud to sheeply serve them.

    • CrazedLeper

@Evie, the vast majority of the Elite have attained that status by holding their fellow man in casual regard (at best). They won’t see what’s wrong with that until the prisons have to be emptied and they find hundreds of hungry criminals climbing over their wrought-iron gates and sullying their manicured lawns. The rich, for the most part, should be eaten.

  • Ed_B

Sorry, Evie, but this is not austerity. It is collapse in its many and ugly forms. News stories have been reported where some Greek people are abandoning their children because they cannot feed them. Most of these are to orphanages, thank God, instead of by the side of the road, but it is a national disgrace of epic proportions. A state that cannot even establish the basic conditions of life is an utterly failed state, IMHO. All of this is due to over-spending and borrowing. People cannot do it, communities cannot do it, and states cannot do it. To do so is to court disaster and that is what we are seeing in Greece today… unmitigated disaster. In spite of this, has anyone heard of any food relief aid for Greece? I haven’t and am wondering why the international charities are not on the ball with this.

@Ed_B, Coming VERY soon to America.

    • cara

Overspending and debt is the preferred policy of our current US administration. It is hard to believe that our president is too stupid to see what his policies are doing especially with him being touted as a brillant scholar. So that means he is choosing to bring the US into collapse like Greece is now seeing.
As far as why we have not heard of food aid, I suspect it is because the Greece situation is being kept kind of quiet. You can’t show that and tell the American people how wonderful the economy is.

  • ANGRY AMERICAN

SORRY ED- B BUT THIS IS AUSTERITY PRODUCED BY THE CRIMINAL BANKING CARTELS. I DON’T KNOW WHY PEOPLE LIKE YOU CONTINUE TO IGNORE THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM. THE CRIMINAL BANKING CARTEL CREATED THE SITUATION IN GREECE. THEY CREATE THESE SITUATIONS ALL OVER THE WORLD AND THROUGHOUT HISTORY. I SUPPOSE YOU BELONG TO THE MAJORITY WHO JUST CAN’T WRAP THEIR MINDS AROUND SPECTACULAR EVIL. YOU CAN’T SEEM TO ACCEPT THE FACT THAT THERE IS A GROUP OF PEOPLE CONSPIRING TO ENSLAVE THE WORLD. YOU PROBABLY ASSUME THAT YOU ARE A DECENT FELLOW AND YOU JUST CAN’T ACCEPT THE FACT THAT THERE ARE A GROUP OF PSYCHOPATHS WHO ARE TOTALLY RUTHLESS AND WITHOUT A MORAL COMPASS. HISTORY IS FILLED WITH HOMICIDAL MANIACS AND GOVERNMENTS. WHY IS IT SUCH A STRETCH TO IMAGINE MEGALOMANIACS RISING TO THE TOP IN BANKING, CORPORATIONS AND GOVERNMENTS AND COOPERATING TOGETHER TO ENHANCE THEIR POWER AND STRANGLEHOLD OVER THE REST OF US. I BELIEVE THE BIBLICAL ACCOUNT THAT EVERY SINGLE HUMAN BEING IS EVIL, SELFISH AND CORRUPT. BUT THE PEOPLE RUNNING THE WORLD ARE EVIL AND RUTHLESS ON AN UNIMAGINABLE SCALE. AND I NOTICE YOU CALL THE DISASTER IN GREECE A NATIONAL DISGRACE OF EPIC PROPORTIONS AS IF THE RANK AND FILE GREEK CITIZEN HAS BROUGHT THIS ON THEMSELVES. DESTITUTE FAMILIES IN INDIA, CHINA, AFRICA ETC FREQUENTLY ABANDON AND SELL THEIR CHILDREN BECAUSE THEY CANNOT FEED THEM. NO MATTER HOW “GOOD” WE FANCY OURSELVES NONE OF US KNOWS FOR SURE WHAT WE WOULD DO IN THEIR SITUATION. SO I DON’T SEE IT AS A NATIONAL DISGRACE AT ALL. I KNOW WHERE TO LAY THE LIONS SHARE OF THE BLAME. PEOPLE LIKE YOU SIT SMUGLY AT HOME AND PONTIFICATE ABOUT A NATIONAL DISGRACE WHEN YOU HAVE OBVIOUSLY NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS KIND OF TRIBULATION.

  • Evie

I know what austerity is. It is not because the people have borrowed and spent beyond their means. It is because the banks, politicans and corporations have. Did you hear about people from s america and other areas sending their kid s to the usa. I am aware of the desperation as a result of thievery. One must look out for themselves and not believe gov. And corporations. No funny I only see ads on tv for haito and other developing nations that appear to be doing well. It appears aide is as selective as morals in this society.

  • Bob Swanson

Just think – if you were about to starve, who would you give allegience to… And the answer is – To anyone (scary)

    • http://canditalitia@yahoo.com Candi

@Bob Swanson, This is the scariest and most thought provoking comment i have read. sad but true..

  • http://WWW.NOCIRC.ORG Bob Fairlane

Where are those big spending top-hat internationalists now? Where are those engorged pigs in USA who waste billions on foreign aid now, for a few grains of rice to European men? Where are all those volunteers who helped the Haitian savages to contain themselves and stack dead bodies, to run soup kitchens in a European country? Why is Greece left for dead? Because it is a European country?

    • akvalmet30

Were it everyone’s favorite little I$RAEL, the money would have came pouring in, guess Greeks aren’t “chosen” enough. Let the whole world banking establishent and all the puppet governments it has spawned crumble into chaos, this crap can’t last forever.

      • SKIP

@akvalmet30, WRONG! if it is MUSLIMS waging war on Ameria, its’ way of life and freedoms, then the OBAMUSLIM regime is all for feeding, arming, supporting them and TRANSPORTING THEM TO AMERICA to ontinue their jihad against us.

Letting a banker starve you to death defies logic. Not kicking the crap out of him for trying to starve you or your family defies logic. ESPECIALLY with the ‘fiat’ nature of today’s monetary systems made possible by the sweat of labor and other work, ONLY.

  • PJ London

What people forget is that none of the “bailout” money went to the people of Greece.
“Germany (Europe)” lent the Greek Government money, which was handed to the banks, which paid off “German (Europe)” loans from German pension funds. Any excess went to German companies which are building Armaments for the Greek nation. Just who the heck wants to attack Greece at this time is not divulged.
Surely it is time to bring all the troops home from any foreign country, and turn all the expensive toys into “Ploughshares”. Let the army sew, plant harvest and deliver what is important, “Food”.
Switzerland, Afghanistan and Iraq showed how national defence should be handled. By AK47s one bullet at a time. Libya’s problem was that they tried to stop them ay the borders, remember Stalingrad, suck them into the streets, factories and houses, and then deliver your opinion on their occupation. One bullet at a time.

    • SKIP

@PJ London, Greece is in the straits it is in partially because the EU is forcing the country and citizens to care for, feed, house and medicate millions of black African muslim that have invaded their country. How much money would America save if we stopped supporting muslims, ILLEGAL aliens and other foreign hostile enemy nations? I’m guessing a LOT! HELL!~ how uch would we save if we got rid of congress and senate, it is THEY that help themselves to our tax money and THEY that give it away to hostile enemy nations.

    “Please stop SHOUTING!”

    No s***!

“SORRY ED- B BUT THIS IS AUSTERITY PRODUCED BY THE CRIMINAL BANKING CARTELS.”

Yes, it is. But I care less about who created it than that our fellow human beings in Greece are suffering terribly and need some basic survival assistance. Talk is cheap. Action is needed on this and MUCH sooner than later after all the yapping is done.

    “I DON’T KNOW WHY PEOPLE LIKE YOU…”

You haven’t got a clue as to what kind of person I am, so stop trying to shove me into your little cube that only you can define.

“I know what austerity is. It is not because the people have borrowed and spent beyond their means.”

I never said what it was or was not. All I am saying is that our fellow human beings in Greece are suffering terribly and need some help. In this situation, one can side with the banksters or with the suffering people of Greece. I choose the people of Greece. What you choose is up to you.

  • bloodyrich

Arguing over whether it is the people spending more than they produce or the banksters fraud that caused it is funny- IT IS BOTH. Government programs costing more than society paid for in taxes, & the banksters enabled the spending, and allowed to go on longer than it naturally could have without their accounting tricks & money manipulation. Either may have led to problems, but it was together that made it the situation we see. But that doesn’t mean the people should starve to death – it means we & they must learn from these mistakes. Many were doing what the society said was ok. Meaning first to increase production & reduce debt, and 2 never trust a bankster. See beyond the left/right lie we are sold!
