Cop on Tape: “You Must Be Doing Something Wrong if You Need to Invoke Your Rights”

| |

It has been upheld time and time and time and TIME again that the First Amendment protects one’s right to film police officers in public. Period.

That is it. End of story.

It is also not illegal to film locations from public property, even those that have been designated as “secure”. A sign is not a law and does not negate the Constitution. It just isn’t and it just doesn’t, despite an apparent effort to make it seem that way.

Now listen to what this cop says to these guys who recently decided to film prisoners being transported in and out of the Duval County, Florida courthouse’s sally port without identifying themselves:

“You must be doing something wrong if you need to invoke your rights.”

As The Free Thought Project wrote, just let that statement sink in for a minute…

Apparently this is the standard law enforcement mentality in the American police state. Sure, you have rights; if you invoke them however, “you must be doing something wrong…”

    is this sheriff a oathkeeper?
    Hope not!
But to the point what is the point of filming the cop shop though?
but ya hate that comment of how you always have to have something to hide if you envoke your rights.
hey ass hat it’s called using a right before it’s taken from us because we dont’ invoke it enuff.
stop assuming everyone is a criminal because they are standing up for their rights damnit!

Similar sentiments regarding surrendering rights: “Honor,
justice, and humanity, forbid us tamely to surrender that freedom which
we received from our gallant ancestors, and which our innocent posterity
have a right to receive from us. We cannot endure the infamy and guilt
of resigning succeeding generations to that wretchedness which inevitably
awaits them if we basely entail hereditary bondage on them.”

The cop has it backwards. You’re doing something wrong if you DON’T invoke and use your rights!

With all the cops out there that are clueless of the laws they are supposed to enforce I advise my teenage kids that if they are stopped and the cops start to question them they are to tell the cops that they will not make a statement until one of their parents get there. Cops are not your friends. They twisted the law to the point that it is so ambiguous that they could pin anything on anybody. And we wonder why cops are being ambushed.

Give the same argument back to the cops – If they don’t want their activities photographed it must be because they’re doing something wrong or are planning to do something wrong.

“You have it backwards, officer. I wouldn’t have to invoke my rights if you weren’t doing something wrong.”

  • u must be doing something wrong if u r a cop

Tim it would help your cause if you stayed on topic. It’s all well and good to state your case but you need to make it within the conversation. Your shotgun approach to an article makes people role their eyes and shut you out.

  • u can only vote for corporate entities, rand is a sellout. reboot the republic . LEAVE USA INC, and restart usA .
USA INC isn’t a gov’t. just a puke corporation created by vomitstains on America : lawyers, who are not allowed to be in office or as usA citizens.
you are rather ignorant. Is this Hillary Clinton?

  • USA INC is owned by ENGLAND.

I have tried in the past to give police officers the benefit of the doubt but that being said it seems more and more are bad apples. The militarization of the police and the psychology that is drummed into the recruits creates an us vs them attitude among some police.

Add to that a prison and jail system that creates financial incentives to incarcerate as many people as possible and it’s a recipe for ugliness. We will see how bad it gets and what the publics reaction is but I’m sad to see so many reports of police misconduct.
