CDC Chief: Banning Flights from Ebola-Ridden African Nations Will Cause More Americans to Get Ebola

| |

Someone please PLEASE explain to me how this makes sense at all. Please.

Now, CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden, the guy who couldn’t even go two minutes without contradicting himself on CNN about how Ebola is transmitted, is now saying that if we restrict air flights from the Ebola-stricken African nations, it will “backfire” and cause Americans to somehow be exposed to the disease more here.

Wha…? Am I missing something here?

Here’s the clip via Politico:

“Even if we tried to close the border, it wouldn’t work,” the top health official added. “People have a right to return. People transiting through could come in. And it would backfire, because by isolating these countries, it’ll make it harder to help them, it will spread more there and we’d be more likely to be exposed here.”

How exactly does that work?

How would it spread more here if it isn’t coming here on a plane — the fastest method of global travel commercially available — from the countries where it is spreading out of control?

Governments could still send in special flights to send aid. The Pentagon is already talking about sending 4,000 soldiers now instead of the initial 3,000 Obama originally ordered.

But let’s look at this logically for a moment, from a standpoint of using something called common sense (which apparently isn’t that common anymore, and is definitely going extinct within the U.S. federal government).

Ebola Patient Zero Thomas Duncan arrived here via not one, but three flights from Liberia, through Brussels, to Dulles Airport in D.C. and finally on to Dallas, Texas. When he left Liberia, he straight up lied on the questionnaire they presented him with about whether or not he had been exposed to anyone infected with Ebola. So step one on their “rigorous” protocols for stopping Ebola from leaving the country failed. Utterly.

That’s because, and feel free to send in the scientific documentation to correct me if I’m wrong here, but questionnaires have not been shown in any studies that I am aware of to stop freaking viruses from spreading!

Secondly, Duncan was not showing any symptoms when he left the country, so when they took his temperature to see if he had a fever, they came up with nothing…even though he still had Ebola. That’s because it can take up to 21 days for someone to present with symptoms. That’s three weeks. So protocol two also failed, indeed proving that simply taking people’s temperatures is not a good enough preventative measure.

Why? Because again, you can’t stop Ebola with a thermometer and a worksheet. These are not really valid safety measures. This is probably why Virologist Heinz Feldmann, who has been studying Ebola and working on a vaccine for two decades now, told Science Magazine in September that he felt the most unsafe, of all places he’d been to in Monrovia, specifically at the airport because their Ebola screening measures were quote “a disaster”.

But beyond that, what in the hell is the CDC Director even talking about? The Ebola patient came here on a flight. If we stop flights, how will that “backfire” and cause more Ebola here? Pardon my caps, BUT WE WOULDN’T HAVE EBOLA HERE RIGHT NOW IF THEY HAD STOPPED FLIGHTS!

It’s actually exceedingly simple. Perhaps that’s why the government can’t seem to conceive of it. Some things are difficult but this isn’t one of those things.

A) If no flights come to this country with passengers who originated in Ebola-ravaged countries and might have Ebola themselves and not even know it, then B) it will at least be that much more difficult for Ebola patients to slip through the cracks and come here, eliminating a very large percentage of the threat for it to spread.

My teenage daughter gets this concept…why can’t the people who are supposed to be in charge of our country get this concept?

How about this? How about if someone has even been in those countries, they have to wait 21 days before coming here in a preventative quarantine? I’m certainly not for martial law or taking away anyone’s rights, but at this point if they show up here with Ebola, the CDC will quarantine them and take away their rights anyway, as we are now seeing with Duncan’s family members in Dallas who are on a 21-day control order that forces them to stay inside and make themselves available for any and all medical tests public health officials deem necessary on demand, or they will face criminal charges.

So, either way, rights are not being upheld. Might as well not put a bunch of other people in mortal danger while we are already on the slip ‘n slide straight to global pandemic land.

By the way, people “transiting through” as he called it, aren’t even required to answer questions about whether or not they’ve traveled to Guinea, Liberia or Sierra Leone. That’s how “rigorous” these supposed safety measures they keep referring to as “rigorous” are. In fact, the doctor in Atlanta who traveled there from Guatemala to protest the CDC said the only question he was asked upon entering the country from South America is whether or not he had any alcohol or tobacco on his person. That’s right. He didn’t even get the little questionnaire.

And people like Dr. Tom Frieden are the people in charge of this nightmare…a nightmare our government did everything it could to help facilitate, or at the very least, hardly anything to actually stop.

But don’t worry. The White House says they have it all under control.

We really are living in a bad horror movie.

In the meantime, I feel like the guy running the competition at the end of the Adam Sandler film Billy Madison.

Dr. Frieden, this one’s for you:

“What you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”

Remember “We have to pass the bill in order to find out what is in it.”? I am convinced there is no quote too stupid or false that half the American citizenry would believe it and approve.

    • Elvis Henley

The bill was passed, and after it was passed, did you find out more of what was in it, or more accurately, did you find more about the consequences (good or bad) of what was in it before or after it was passed?

  • TruthIsAll

I can’t wait until they start saying “We need to kill you in order to save you!”. Some real powerful doublethink they’ve got going on here. Orwellian big brother for us who rebel, Huxleyan ignorant bliss for the sheep.

    • YaRt

      The word “KILL” was determined to be to harsh in a study by leading experts. We prefer you to use the term;

The “Spanish (Fort Riley Kansas) Flu” of 1918 killed 50-plus Million people worldwide: worst hit was Western Samoa. UNTOUCHED WAS AMERICAN SAMOA: GUESS WHY?

“Worst affected was Western Samoa, a territory then under New Zealand military administration. A crippling 90% of the population was infected; 30% of adult men, 22% of adult women and 10% of children died. By contrast, the flu was kept away from American Samoa when Governor John Martin Poyer imposed a blockade.[59

The cdc chief is being politically correct and non racist. Morons are afraid they will hurt a foreigners feelings and of course let’s not hurt the Liberians feelings, let em in, even if they have Ebola, remember they said its hard to catch. So tired of these ignorant morons.
I also don’t think we should be exposing our military to Ebola, dumb idea.

  • mirageseekr

Am I the only one that is reminded of “mission accomplished” and “Heck of a job Brownie” right about now? And thank you americuh for “We have to pass the bill to find out what is in it”. We would fare better if we made this a 6th grade science project rather than leaving it up to the government.

This disease seems to target people who do not understand viral pathology….Why are these people touching things and then themselves in areas known to be high risk.

Case in point. I compromised to group living for many years due to financial pressure by the establishment. I averted multiple flus and colds despite its ubiquitous nature. I am always at high risk of contracting due to some lifestyle factors indicated by my name. Guess what. I managed to go multiple years with no infections living in close quarters, sharing utensils. I have a protocol for the situation. Colds and Flus are way more transmissive than Ebola. People would do best to be intelligent about their conduct with others. Caring for the sick is not a smart thing to do here. Individuals need to quarantine themselves. I tell everyone when I am sick no matter what pathogen I’ve got (so what if I am privy to knowing what it probably is). Its the right thing to do.

Why did Duncan come in contact with a homeless person at all (which I saw in other reports)? That is one group I’d go right to if I wanted disease to be spread wide and random in the land of the USA.

The airlines shouldn’t need to be ordered to do the right thing- not provide service to know pandemic areas. They are promoting the problem more than the governments failure to force the airlines to shut down. People should acknowledge that fact.

  • Bongstar420

Lets say that the airlines shut down all North African flights. Wouldn’t it take longer than a week to get out of that region?

Lets say that all travel was shut down and people had to resort to cars or feet to get out of the place….Would they even make it out of their country in most cases?

  • I am American

Since there is NO danger send this POS over there for 30 days to personally assess the situation and report back to the Kenyan IDIOT

  • william

Obama is out to destroy America. The president and others in high places has a vaccine for themselves. We are not being told the truth. they are spreading all these diseases then comes martial law and FEMA camps. If you think I am nuts wait until you wake up some morning with fever, aching, coughing ect.

  • readytomove

Wonder what their excuse will be when more cases start showing up in America? It was for the greater good of Americans that more cases were allowed into the country…. when will the citizens of this country become the presidents priority? If citizens are calling for borders to be closed, you may want to pay attention because if one more case pops up in America, there is going to be an uproar that they have never seen before. Can we then call for impeachment of our do nothing president and his good for nothing administration?

  • AbnDoc

But, there is a difference in the possibility of this disease entering America and becoming a pandemic if we allow free and open travel between Liberia and if we stop travel from Liberia.

It takes 21 days for Ebola to incubate. If 1000 people who are infected fly to America, only a few will actually show symptoms and be quarantined. The remaining 990 or so will come here, visit malls, schools, and travel around our country carrying Ebola and then suddenly, in the middle of a group of school age kids or parents shopping begin to vomit or sneeze or bleed. If every one of those 990 people infected only 3 or 4 people, the number of infected could be as high as 4000 in mere moments.

Of course, we have already stopped men from Liberia trying to cross our southern border and since Obama refuses to close our borders for any reason, some will make it through. But, we have to stop as many as we can. This isn’t the common cold we are dealing with now.

  • AbnDoc

Disarming and bowing to our enemy will make them our friends. More genius logic from the left. Kind of like a woman taking her clothes off so the rapist won’t attack her.

  • Alex

Just for one quick moment – put yourself in a position of an American citizen living abroad. You’ve been trying to tough it out in the home you’d created in a West African nation for the past couple of years. You have friends, you have family, you have a life there. Of course you’re not going to just up and readily abandon your life. You’ve been in the clear for a while now, no one you’ve known has gotten it, but suddenly – your neighbor next door comes down with Ebola.

You decide it’s in your and your family’s best interest to return to the US, your home country – of which you are still a legal citizen. You’ve had no contact with anyone who has Ebola, and you are healthy.

You try to book a flight out of there, as Ebola is circling closer and closer to you. But – you can’t. You’re not allowed to return to your home. Your president has shut down borders. He’s shut down borders because there has been one case of Ebola that came from a West African nation.

You are left in West Africa, your government has thrown up it’s hands and said, “too bad for you!” You have no choice, you can’t come home.

While Ebola is terrifying, let’s put things into perspective here and not be the fear mongers that health workers are warning against. The Ebola outbreak began in February 2014. And while of course even one case in America is scary (and yes, now there is a second one, due to a breach in protocol) let’s remember that in eight months, there has been ONE case that made it through into the US.

Shutting down borders would create a crucible of infection, infecting people who could have potentially gotten out of Ebola ridden areas safe and healthy. You’re trapping the healthy – many of whom have every right as a human to leave if they so choose. You’re condemning the healthy to a very risky life, and possibly death by shutting down the borders. Infection will spread like wildfire under those conditions, making it harder to eradicate. And if it’s harder to eradicate at the source, the longer it will go on and more people will die.

And if you say, “Well they can die as long as it’s not us” then I’m not sure what kind of argument any rational, reasonable person can make back to that, because you’re clearly on a different page than caring and compassionate people everywhere. Remember, we are a global community.
