Canada: Welcome to the Gulag

Canada’s kinder, gentler reputation is about to be tarnished.

In a paradoxical ruling, the federal government has issued a directive to the RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) and the CBSA (Canadian Border Services Agency), allowing information resulting from torture to be used and shared.

This is despite the fact that the Canadian government has signed international treaties prohibit torture and other forms of cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment. The government also claims not to “condone” torture.

To neatly skirt the issue of permission to torture, the ruling only regards the information obtained through torture.  The criteria used by  the RCMP commissioner or the border services agency president in making the decision to use such information:

— The importance to Canada’s security of sharing the information;

— The status of Canada’s relationship with — and the human rights record of — the foreign agency;

— The rationale for believing that sharing the information would lead to torture;

— The proposed measures to lessen the risk, and the likelihood they will be successful — for instance, the agency’s track record in complying with past assurances and the ability of its officials to make good on them;

— The views of Foreign Affairs and other agencies.

So, basically, they can only torture people….if they want to.

While it’s the United States with the “police state” reputation, Canada is falling quickly in line with barbaric public policies such as this.  Unfortunately, these things are done so quietly in the northern country that most Canadians are unaware of it.
