Bomb Squad Called, Neighborhood Evacuated, Just to Recover Box of Old Ammo

.40 bullets

There’s a bizarre paranoia streak running through American culture these days. It’s difficult to pin down the exact time period that it first emerged, but one thing we know for sure is that Americans have become one of the most easily frightened populations on the planet. It’s amazing that any of the sheep in this society manage to step out the front door of their homes.

Unfortunately, our fears have finally reached a new level of absurdity. On Saturday, several homes in a San Antonio neighborhood were evacuated by the fire department, and a police bomb squad was called in. The reason? A dusty old box of ammo.

Apparently there was a sealed box of 75 rounds of .40 caliber ammo, and it was about 40 years old (though there’s some debate about that, since 40 s&w is the only commonly used .40 caliber round, and it wasn’t invented until 1990). The current residents of the home where this ammo was found, suspect that it was left behind by a veteran who used to live there. And this isn’t first time this has happened. The bomb squad was called to the same house a week before to take care of a box of shotgun shells. As for why this is a threat worthy of calling the authorities, the captain of the bomb squad told NBC News that “They’ve rusted, they’ve been exposed to the weather, elements outside so we definitely want to get them disposed of as quickly as possible.”

Really? That’s absolutely ridiculous. Rusty ammo is dangerous to shoot and it needs to be disposed of properly, but it’s not like they will just spontaneously cook off while sitting under a house. It sounds like the bomb squad just needed an excuse to justify its existence, which is easy to do when you live in a paranoid society.

Sounds like someone is trying desperately to justify their job and purpose. As stated, ammo will not spontaneously cook off. If the so-called captain of this squad doesn’t know that then he should be fired immediately.

It’s a pretty common misconception or mass stupidity. A film dictator once told me that his actors were afraid of the ammo he had on set. Listing fears such as it might go off if drooped or hit. I pointed out that if it was easy to get the rounds to go off simply by hitting or dropping them they wouldn’t come in a cardboard box. Aspirin is probably more dangerous, it comes in sealed plastic container with a child proof cap.

I would like to know what does it cost to the taxpayers of this town for this.

I went to the original news report, saw the pic of the box of cartridges, enlarged it to about 150% and, with just a wee bit of a squint read “9mm Luger” on a headstamp. I’d like the first one of us to let me know when they see a rusted brass cartridge case…

Don’t laugh ! Only morons with IQ below room temperature, are considered for government employment …. Had a funny situation here in Aus with a government employee, Had him on the phone, called him a stupid moron & told him to take me to court & bring the evidence & then even the Court will see what kind of morons work for government departments ??? Never heard another word ?? That was about 15 years ago ? I’m maybe in the government black book,as a potential “terrorist”?? But what the hell ??

These morons should be changed for the cost of having all these people come to their house and make a big scene. If I had to evacuate my house because the bomb squad shows up, and I found out that it was because of a stupid neighbor who found old ammo in the house, I would be so pissed off. That neighbor would get an earful of how stupid they are. And if after that they were stupid enough to call them again, then we would have problems.
Thankfully I don’t have any neighbors who are that dumb.
I did attend a party in the woods where we used to drink beer while standing around a fire at night when I was much younger, and when it was getting late and the beer was running out and the party was winding down, my buddy throws a box of ammo in the fire. Needless to say, everyone ran for their lives. I don’t think they would have had enough velocity to kill anyone, but nobody knew that. I don’t know exactly what kind of ammo it was, but it was some kind of large hunting rounds he stole from his dad, looked kind of like 30-06 or .308 or something like that. It took about a minute or so before they started popping. It was a stupid thing to do, but it was very funny to watch everyone panic and try to run through the woods at night, in the dark, while they were really drunk.
I miss the days when we could do whatever we wanted and nobody gave a crap. Not even the police gave a crap what we did, as long as we weren’t bothering anybody.
We would walk through the woods during the day and shoot our guns at whatever, or ride our dirt bikes down the trails, and whatever else we felt like doing. And at night we would build a fire in the fire pit we dug way out in the middle of the woods and stand around drinking beer and bullshitting about whatever. Life was simple. We didn’t worry about the government or the police or being forced to get vaccinated. None of what is going on now ever seemed like a possibility back then. I don’t think that our parents would have ever tolerated the level of corruption and lawlessness that people nowadays do. What the hell happened?

  • The Infidel

What a bunch of total BS. Called the Bomb Squad???I guess that’s what we can expect from the “squat to pee” crowd!!

  • The Infidel

I’ve got a bunch of .45ACP ammo (circa 1945-Korean War) that still shoots as well as the day it was manufactured. No primer rust, brass corrosion, etc.

  • Cracker122049

The old cordite in the old briitsh 303rounds from WWII still go boom too,as do the 45 1911 rounds do! Especially if they have been stored correctly.
