Another Perspective: Arm the Teachers and School Staff

In the wake of any sort of public shooting, the question is always asked: “What can we possibly do to prevent this from happening in the future”.

When that question is asked the most popular answers are sadly always filled with misinformed gun control rhetoric.  Many people suggest that if the government were to force ALL citizens to turn in their guns, or turn in their powerful guns, that this will somehow take away the criminals ability to inflict harm on people.

This very naive assumption is based on the idea that a government actually has the ability to successfully prohibit items, which when looking at the drug war, they obviously are not able to prevent people from possessing, selling or manufacturing any item, they are only able to impose stricter sentences on someone, should they be caught violating said prohibition.

This is not only false hope, but a false solution as well, allowing people to believe that the problem has been solved, when in fact nothing has been solved, politicians have merely scrawled more words onto paper and made more threats.  In reality they have done nothing to solve the problem.

If someone were to truly want to solve the problem of school shootings, they would allow various, random staff members to carry guns, and post signs allowing intruders, and potentially violent students to know that they will not get very far if they plan on carrying out an attack.

Allowing random staff members at choice to carry weapons, instead of mandating all teachers to do so or mandating them not to, would bring an extra element of security to the equation, because no one would know which teachers were armed and which ones were not, forcing them to assume that all of them are.

For an attacker, knowing that they are walking into a firing squad can be a very strong deterrent.  On the other hand, under our current “no gun school zone” policies, attackers are given the message that the whole building will be defenseless.

As many of you who follow my regular work are already aware, I am an advocate of unschooling and homeschooling, and I feel that the kind of schooling that we have today is counterproductive and oppressive.  There are a lot of great teachers out there, who care about what they do and have every good intentions, like the world famous educator John Taylor Gatto, but as he found, the top down structure of the school system and the curriculum provided is very damaging to the minds of children.

He left public schools by writing his resignation letter in the op ed pages of the wall street journal, starting the letter off by saying that he “refuses to continue hurting children”.  He then went on to start an incredible career in writing, researching and speaking out about the dangers of compulsory schooling.

This element is important, because the public school system combined with other forms of child abuse has worked to create the kind of violent and angry culture that we see today.  When you treat people like prisoners and second class citizens for the most vital developmental years of their lives, you are going to create confused, bitter and deranged people.  There is still value in group learning settings, and there is still value in teachers, but what we have today is indoctrination, not education.

With that being said, whether we are talking about a place of voluntary group learning in a free society or the compulsory public schools that we see today, the administrators should be armed.  A convenience store clerk protects his store with a gun, and by the same logic a teacher or administrator should be able to protect their schools with a gun as well.

These were planned attacks with multiple shooters- very difficult to thwart such an attack without intelligence or firepower. Arming one person against three may buy time for those escaping, but there will still be carnage unless the principal is Clint Eastwood.

    • superdave:-)

      Home schooling is the answer.

  • Intrinsic

Defenseless, it is time to recognize that we are unable to defend everyone all the time with our police departments. It appears the time is now to allow teachers to be trained to use weapons, a gun. Times in America are becoming more and more dangerous.

Our police are not our 24/7 body guards, and to keep people defenseless by not allowing them to protect themselves will lead to more mass murders. Why do you think these murderers chose schools, movie theaters and other places that do not allow weapons, they know there will be no resistance from their victims.

It is impossible to tell when the next deranged person will attack and where. So allow us all to defend ourselves, families, children and schools. Oh yes, the liberals will use this as another chance for more gun control to keep the people defenseless under the guise of protecting us so they can control us more and restrict our Constitutional freedoms.

The governments motto is, “do not let any tragedy go to waste”. We are the safe keepers of our children and families and country, so do not prevent us from taking that responsibility into to our own hands. We are the instant responders at the time of an incident, not the police or government. If you have to call 911, it is already too late.

This is an indication that American must turn back to God to receive his blessings. Many citizens have turned away from God and are living by distorted values and choices.

Arm teachers and clerks… lol – only in the USA.
Why not distinguished students too? Cause the offender may star to shoot the teacher, therefore maybe hald a dozen more guns in each classroom would be optimal, a dozen maybe – and target practicing in the courtyard after lunch?
The 2nd amm. is simply outdated – there is no need for weapons, period. Just ban all and prob solved. For good,
Not the prob in the minds of the pro weapon minority, but a couple generations will fix it.

      • Chris

“Just ban all and prob solved. For good.”

That’s what an uneducated, naive and brainless fool would say. Banning something will not solve anything. It’ll only make things worse or have no effect on them. Get a clue please.

    • edprof

Good assessment. I think you’re right on all counts.

      • edprof

        Good assessment, Intrinsic. Well-considered, well-moderated.

  • Ernie

It’s about time someone comes to their senses. By allowing trained and certified teachers the choice to bear arms at work will finally start to protect our children. All liberal minded, anti gun citizens are living in a fantasy world. The police can not protect our children, they only respond after the fact. The public needs to come to terms with the present danger of our society. Yes, arm the teachers who want to protect our children, give them the tools to be able to fight back.

  • ncjoe

I do not want teachers at my childrens’ school armed. Schools are statistically the safest place for a child. Get your head out of your ass and stop drinking the NRA’s and the gun and ammo industry’s kool aid. The answer to gun violence being more guns makes about as much sense as the answer to drug abuse is more drugs. The stupidity of you people is stupifying.

    • PapaCharlie

      Very well said!

    • baka

Looks like we have a couple of sheep here people…BaaaBaaaa…..LOL

      • Nexus789

Lots of simpletons like you though.

    • Airborne4325

Do we not get people off of heroin by giving them methadone? Off nicotine by giving them wellbutrin? Decrease the debt by a Stimulus Package? A “Gun Free Zone” insures that there will be only 1 person with a gun, better hope they have good intentions.

    • Orwellian States

Are you the same ncjoe that hangs around at SHTFPLAN?
You sound just like the guy who likes to try pushing buttons at that site. I taught school for over 40 years. Four staff members including, the principal, had carry permits. However, they could not legally carry on school property. My wife always worried about a problem happening at my school. If you haven’t worked in an open building such as a school where everyone wears a target, then keep your uninformed, lefty opinions to yourself, dumb ass. Talk about stupid!

    • Brian

You are the cool aid drinking ass to think that schools are the safe place to be, what rock have you been hiding under. I have and will always be armed in and out of school I will not allow something like this to happen if I am able. What absolute fool thinks disarming america is the answer ask the jews from nazi germany, mau, stalin, and hitler were total gun control advocates. IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT???

      • Nexus789

It is claimed by the IGNORANT that the Nazis removed guns from the German people. They did not and this is a historical fact. Tyranny was secured through ownership of the mind and not through the barrel of a gun.

    • Jean

Actually, there are SEVERAL drugs used to combat drug abuse.
Alcoholics take one; opium addicts another. Causes violent illness in alcoholics, should they drink; not sure the opiate solution’s effects, I believe it’s a placebo.
However, it immediately invalidates the drug comparison, which is inaccurate regardless: Guns can be used for defense as well as offense. Drugs tend to be toxic no matter how they are used. Look up chemotherapy; look up Spirotone (blood pressure medication, a “potassium-sparing diuretic.”) Look up the side effects of anti-prostate-hyperplasy drugs: most result in some feminization of a male body. Don’t even get started on anti-psychotic or anti-depressant drugs; these are all based on “the positive benefits outweigh the negative side-effects.” In other words, “I don’t want to die of prostate cancer, so I’ll deal with growing breasts.” No dissimilar to a recent Miss America, I believe it was, who is (was?) considering double-masectomy to PREVENT breast cancer. (Lost her mother to breast cancer. Tested negative for the genetic markers, wanted to NOT have her breasts anyway.)

So, GUNS: Yup, they can be destructive. But claiming that there’s no defense against a gun except a COP? What about a retired US Army Private? Might he or she be able to shoot back? Are police somehow imbued with godhood?
Or are you afraid that you might hurt someone or kill someone? I can udnerstand the fear; you need to understand they intend to kill you, and begging and pleading and even RUNNING is not a safeguard. This is especially true in this situation, dealing with someone who (a) did not have permission to own guns, (b) was on medication for mental issues, (c) killed his own mother to get the guns and inflict this damage. He couldn’t get guns legally, so he STOLE some guns. Do you understand what stole means, boys and girls?

It means he TOOK something that WASN’T HIS. Could have done the same from a police officer or drug dealer, or bought one illegally. More difficult, yes, but still ILLEGAL from the inception.

Can’t deal with the fact that a determined, evil individual will find a way? Oklahoma City ring any bells? Fallujah? IEDs? Your only option is to take responsibility for protecting yourself.
In normal terms, that means knowing the basics of fightin and fighting includes shooting. Otherwise, when the police arrive, and figure out the situation, and prioritize what’s needed, and decide whether or not to breach… they’ll put a nice chalk line around your body.

      • Disgusted

You just jumped to a TON of conclusions offered up to you on a silver platter whereby all reasoning has been done for you (just as Zbigniew Brzezinski back in the 1980s said would be done). You dear have just been given pablum to regurgitate–we don’t know that this shooter did ANY of the things attributed to him such as steal the guns, OR shoot his own mother or even shoot anyone at the school. Perhaps you’ve not seen the interviews with a number of people in Newtown (including some of the children at the school) who said that the police had taken more than one person into custody for questioning? Of course, that info was scrubbed very quickly because it won’t fit into the ever-present “lone guneman” scenario. And of course, now the media is deeming the dead and unable to defend herself mother, as a “prepper” and “doomsdayer” and of course, the father (who is a tax executive for General Electric and perhaps connected to the LIBOR scandal or knows something about it) has gone into hiding; probably permanently. He knows his life isn’t worth spit should he make the wrong move. And what happened to the missing “girlfriend” or female relative of the lone gunman? There was talk of missing females very early on…but oops, just another media mistake I guess. Let us just wait until the (don’t believe your lying eyes) media wraps it all up for us with a Disneyworld bow and we can sing “It’s a small world after all” holding hands again and lighting the vigil candles.

        • Jean

Your judgement of me is overly harsh. I’ve heard more since this was written, though nothing about female relatives. What you list are actually also points I used in another response (somewhere on this site… god knows where!)
I have heard about the LIBOR connection (here), and that his mom was a “prepper” (also here). And that he knew how to shoot.

Now, if you’re even More paranoid than I, you are beyond help. 😉
But everything you listed is possible, no argument there. And I DO believe that after two coincidences, you find a conspiracy. We have what, three or four “coincidences” here?
          Something stinks… (You’re 100% right about that.)

    • Your views are absurd.

  • Intrinsic

NCJO you have blood on your hands!!!

Larry Pratt, head of Gun owners of America is spot on with his comments on this. “Gun control supporters have the blood of little children on their hands. Federal and state laws combined to insure that no teacher, no administrator, no adult
had a gun at the Newtown school where the children were murdered. This tragedy underscores the urgency of getting rid of gun bans in school zones. The only thing accomplished by gun free zones is to insure that mass murderers can slay more before they are finally confronted by someone with a gun.” It is time to stop ALL gun bans and start protecting schools.

    • Nexus789

You gun nuts are so deluded.

      • Jean

        No, Nexus.
“Gun Nuts” are realists. When an armed killer shows up, you can’t stop them with “kumbyah.” You stop them with deadly force, and extreme prejudice.

Counting on the “odds” here got 26 people killed.

  • 142

Responsible gun owners can and do prevent mass shootings from occurring and escalating.
A 1997 high school shooting in Pearl, Miss., was halted by the school’s vice principal after he retrieved the Colt .45 he kept in his truck.
A 1998 middle school shooting ended when a man living next door heard gunfire and apprehended the shooter with his shotgun.
A 2002 terrorist attack at an Israeli school was quickly stopped by an armed teacher and a school guard.
A 2002 law school shooting in Grundy, Va., came to an abrupt conclusion when students carrying firearms confronted the shooter.
A 2007 mall shooting in Ogden, Utah, ended when an armed off-duty police officer intervened.
A 2009 workplace shooting in Houston, Texas, was halted by two coworkers who carried concealed handguns.
A 2012 church shooting in Aurora, Colo., was stopped by a member of the congregation carrying a gun.
At the recent mall shooting in Portland, Ore., the gunman took his own life minutes after being confronted by a shopper carrying a concealed weapon.

    • Nexus789

142 is definitely not your IQ. The idea of the armed citizen is a myth. In a crisis you would probably shot your dick off rather than kill the bad guy.

      • JW

Not sure what you are doing on this thread? Are you just here to stir the pot with your very thoughtful comments? Clearly you are anti-gun and you do not have children in a public school. It’s also fairly obvious that you aren’t able to make a logical argument/connection when you refer to the Nazi’s falsely disarming the German population and our Congress disarming Americans. The Nazi party may not have disarmed the population, but our government clearly is trying to do that. And do you think disarmament will prevent these types of tragedies (Newton) in the future? Criminals don’t care if there is a gun ban. They will still get guns illegally because THEY ARE CRIMINALS. They don’t care about gun bans.

        • Jean

I thought the Nazis DID disarm the populace?
I KNOW they disarmed the Jews en masse, but I thought it was extended to everyone?

          Reliable source I could read?

          • JW

As I understand it, Hitler did not disarm Germany but I have not done any in-depth research on this other than some light internet searching. However, from what I have read, he did disarm the nations that he occupied/invaded.

      • Disgusted

It’s his “dick” to shoot off…what do YOU care??
Get off it bud; you are the one living in Disneyworld…enjoy yourself, but don’t drag the rest of us there with you. The cops are mainly a mop-up crew..always were and always will be. They rarely “get to the scene” in time. You’ve watched too many cop shows. You probably think the detectives are up half the night trying to solve crimes and doctors are wringing their hands and tearing their hair out trying to save their patients…

  • SemperFido

When those opposed to gun rights talk about “reasonable gun control” there is one little problem. I will never be reasonable about it.

  • Stef

@142: I was just thinking that. It is WAY due time that a conceal carrying person stands up to such a shooting and score a few points in favor of being armed. We never hear of any!

  • Locus

Here is a nice poster for your front lawn.

Hey, why should these things be there only during election time?
