A London woman is telling her story of using a natural remedy to cure blood cancer after years of fighting a losing battle using Western medicine as her main weapon. Dieneke Ferguson is now leading a normal life after giving up on the grueling treatments that failed to stop her cancer and putting her trust in nature.

Ferguson put her trust in turmeric. According to the Daily Mail UK, doctors are claiming this is the first recorded incident of a patient recovering by using a spice after stopping medical treatment. Her doctors, from Barts Health NHS Trust in London, wrote about her transition to a natural remedy in the British Medical Journal Case Reports. “To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report in which curcumin has demonstrated an objective response in progressive disease in the absence of conventional treatment,” the doctors wrote.

The type of cancer Ferguson was plagued with, which has an average survival rate of just over five years, was causing increasing back pain and she had already had a second relapse when she knew she needed to make a change. With her myeloma spreading rapidly, and typical treatments continuing to fail, including three rounds of chemotherapy and four stem cell transplants, the 67-year-old began taking 8g of curcumin (one of the main compounds in turmeric) a day.  She also quite doing chemotherapy and the stem cell transplants that had failed her.

Five years after starting taking turmeric as opposed to chemotherapy, Ferguson’s cancer cell count is “negligible.”

Hybrid compounds formed from structural features of the antinausea agent thalidomide and curcumin, an active ingredient in the common kitchen spice turmeric, destroyed multiple myeloma cells in recent lab experiments.

A team led by Shijun Zhang of the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Pharmacy in Richmond, Virginia, designed the hybrid molecules. According to information in a VCU statement accompanying the release of the findings in Organic & Biomolecular Chemistry, laboratory studies have shown that curcumin inhibits the formation of cancer-causing enzymes in rodents. Thalidomide was reintroduced into use in the late 1990s as a treatment for multiple myeloma, after being taken off the market in 1962 because it was found to cause birth defects. –Oncology Nurse Advisor

Dr. Abbas Zaidi, said some myeloma patients have taken dietary supplements alongside conventional treatment but “few if any, use dietary supplementation as an alternative to standard antimyeloma therapy.” Yet, they also admitted that “in the absence of further antimyeloma treatment the patient plateaued and has remained stable for the past five years with good quality of life.”

Many studies have been conducted into the healing and potentially life-altering effects of turmeric. Turmeric is a spice made from grinding the roots of the Curcuma longa plant, also called curcumin. It is a prime ingredient in curry powder, which is common in Indian and Asian cuisine. Curcumin and can be taken in powder or pill form and one can spot turmeric by its distinctively rich, vibrant yellow color.

These studies all suggest the spice can protect against several cancers, not just myeloma, as well as Alzheimer’s, heart disease, and depression. It has also been shown to help speed recovery after surgery and effectively treat arthritis.
Ferguson, who runs Hidden Art, a not-for-profit business helping artists market their work, is frustrated doctors cannot recommend the spice and wants more research carried out. “I hope my story will lead to more people finding out about the amazing health benefits of curcumin,” she said.

Myeloma affects some 5,500 people in the UK every year, killing nearly 3,000.

  • Why the discussion of a natural spice would require the consideration of a laboratory creation is unclear and unexplained. If anything extra was indicated, it would be the addition of piperine as a secondary co-factor, it being also quite natural, and effective.

    • rocquedog

Exactly! Curry already has Piperine (black pepper) and I’ve used it to stop skin cancer (Squamas Cell) by mixing with water and applying directly for a 7-10 day period. I also had Melanoma removed about 15 yrs. ago and started using Turmeric (Curcumin) after. Been free of cancer since.

      • Do you eat or inject the curry? I prefer to take the properly piperined turmeric capsules.

        • rocquedog

          swallow the capsules.

  • hope i have the courage to try the many God given cures rather than the deadly man made treatments if i ever have to choose

    • Why would it take courage to made a decision based on copiously available evidence of efficacy of the natural alternatives?

  • Roy

I have severe osteo arthritis in my neck and shoulders. Completely unable to sleep because of the pain, my Dr. recommended Turmeric. I worked up to an effective dose of 1 tablespoon twice a day. tastes like shit but it works very well. My daytime pain is not even noticeable now and nighttime pain is low enough that I can sleep well!

    • darkhorse

WOW!! Good for you Roy!! Glad it works for you – wonder if there’s a way to flavor it?

      • rocquedog

Use Curry. It has Turmeric, black pepper and other anti inflammatory spices. And it tastes great!

        • darkhorse

I wonder if these spices do a number on a sensitive stomach?

          • rocquedog

I’ve been on stomach meds for over 30 yrs. and no problem with Turmeric/Curcumin and black pepper. Nor does Ginger or Garlic bother me. They are all anti inflammatory spices.

    • canon

You have a good doctor. One that is willing to recommend a natural remedy. I gave up pop a few years ago and have noticed a tremendous difference. Very few headaches anymore and no more back/neck pain for me either! Best wishes to you Roy that you keep on feeling better 🙂

This Extremely Common Drug Given to Alcoholics Also Kills Cancer Cells, and We Finally Know Why
Dana Dovey,Newsweek Sun, Dec 10 9:10 AM CST
Disulfiram (Antabuse) is a drug given to alcoholics to prevent them from drinking, but for decades doctors have noticed the medication appears to have an unexpected side effect: fighting cancer. Now, new research from the Karolinska Institute in Sweden has revealed the biological mechanism behind Antabuse’s effect on cancer.
The study, published earlier this week in Nature, is the culmination of years of research and the combined efforts of scientists from five countries. In the paper, the team explains how Antabuse appears to “freeze” tumor growth by inhibiting an important protein.

Antabuse is an odorless and nearly tasteless powder that, when consumed, causes an unpleasant physical reaction with alcohol, ranging from sweating and hyperventilation to nausea and vomiting. The drug works by interfering with the body’s ability to metabolize or break down alcohol. Specifically, the drug disables aldehyde dehydrogenase, an enzyme in the liver that breaks down alcohol, allowing the body to process it. If aldehyde dehydrogenase is unable to function, alcohol builds up in the bloodstream and causes physical problems.
The drug causes a bad reaction for alcoholics, but a positive reaction for cancer patients.
However, as shown in this new study, Antabuse has another effect on the body. For their study, the researchers observed the drug’s effect on both living mice and on human cancer cells. In doing so, they noted that when the drug is metabolized it causes the protein, NPL4, to clump together with the enzyme p97, immobilizing the protein. This “freezes” the cancer cells and prevents them from disposing of unnecessary proteins. The build-up stresses the cancer cells and eventually causes them to die, Science Magreported.
Results were even more pronounced when the drug was combined with copper, and the drug did not discriminate when it came to what type of cancer cells it killed. In the study it was just as helpful in killing prostate, breast and colon cancer. In addition, only cancer cells are affected by Antabuse while normal cells seem to be unharmed. The reason for this is unclear.

The connection between the drug and cancer treatment dates back decades, with the first case report acknowledging the connection published in 1977 in Progress in Clinical and Biological Research. The case detailed a breast cancer patient who also was an alcoholic. She was given Antabuse to treat her alcoholism, but an autopsy upon her death (which was due to falling from a window, not cancer) revealed that her body was clinically cancer-free despite having no further cancer treatment. In fact, the only drug she had continued to use was Antabuse.
The new study is the first to suggest a biological explanation for this side effect of the drug.
The new study now is the first to suggest a biological explanation for this side effect. Still, Dr. Matthew Galsky, an oncologist and a professor of medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, told Newsweek that it may be too soon to count this as a cancer cure just yet.

“Obviously the major questions are, that’s great that it works in test tubes, but what does this mean for patients, and how do we test that?”
Galsky noted that the study was extremely detailed and showed exactly how this drug affects cancer cells, but we still do not know if the doses used to achieve these results in the laboratory can be safe and effective in human patients.
“Unfortunately, we want advances quick when we are treating cancer because this is a devastating disease, and repurposing drugs does shorten this time,” said Galsky. “Still, we need to do a careful investigation in the clinic to make sure that it’s safe to give adequate doses.”

    • Amanda Ham

It seems reasonable that since this has been a proven safe drug to be administered for years for alcoholism then why not offer it as a treatment choice and study it that way… but I think we all really know the answer on why they insist on “further studies” which will probably never happen.

    • straight shooter

I’m sorry, I’m missing your point in offering this piece of mainstream media about a drug that, even if officially deemed effective as an anti-cancer med–and that’s a huge IF–would ultimately be buried by the FDA/Big Pharma for exactly that reason. Perhaps you’d be more comfortable taking that instead of a natural cure. Not I. No way, no how.

  • L. R. Potter

It might be weird but if you add black pepper it will increase curcumin absortion 1000 times.

  • darkhorse

Watch what happens now… no one will be allowed to buy turmeric!! They’ll keep it under lock and key and only sell it for a fortune… wanna bet?

  • straight shooter

Yep, not surprised. Great stuff, turmeric. I use it every day and put it in everything, even eggs.
