Some listeners have noted the shots are difficult to hear in this call. There are several reasons. The final shot is hard to hear because the gun was pressed against the attacker, turning the attacker’s body into a highly effective suppressor. Also, the recording is naturally picking up layers of distortion over the phone system. Further, the sounds of the door being kicked confuse matters.
To help clarify, Bergner states at¬†5:33, “What are you trying to do, kill me?”, which we know was after some of the shots were fired. The wounded intruder (Bergner) tries to strangle the woman. At¬†5:43, you can faintly hear the final shot, which is suppressed as explained above. The woman then experiences overwhelming shock, as the struggle with the attacker is over.
